About Me

This space is to promote our music. Really?... well there's a change. Just trying to build an audience! So, hope you like our songs, and if you do, please tell your friends and don't forget to let us know. There are 6 songs on this page so if you can't see them all just scroll down the bar at the side of the songs box.If you want to download any of our songs please do, with our compliments. Please feel free to make copies and give to your friends too. (But please acknowledge they are our songs - except Sally Free and Easy which so far as we know is traditional / collected by Cyril Tawney???)........5th Quarter - Clive's been a song writer for a long time but discovered his songs sound a lot better with Jerry's violin or mandolin scribbling all over them... Click below to see 5th Quarter Live at The Star Inn playing The Blind Fiddler and King of the Faeries.............5th Quarter are singer song/writer Clive Whitburn and multi instrumentalist Jerry Bird. Clive is based in Eastbourne on the south coast between Hastings and Brighton. Jerry has just moved to Dorchester - further along the south coast in Dorset. So what does that say for the future... well hopefully lots of great gigs all along the south coast...Their music is a high energy mix of styles which has its roots in folk but has a wide range of influences from rock, to jazz, funk to blues, not to mention the occasional Irish Jig and a host of classical musicians.5th Quarter are available for gigs - please get in touch. If you want a copy of the CD, "SCULPTURES ON THE BEACH", please get in touch. ...If you have any comments about the music 5TH QUARTER would love to hear them... please leave a comment or message. Sounds Like: TIM CARROLL (Folk Words) wrote the following article about 5TH QUARTER: Folk - fused or blended?Investigating the various facets of folk I’m increasingly dragged into what I hear is folk-funk or folk-jazz fusion. Not sure about the need for another definition but 5th Quarter have got something good going on – folk fused with something else or not.Singer songwriter Clive Whitburn writes and sings with an edge evocative of Ian Anderson and an attitude that slightly unsettles the listener. His rich voice invades your ears like warm oil, while multi-instrumentalist Jerry Bird entangles an intricate web of violin over and around the vocals. Sometimes Clive and Jerry take a direction you don’t expect but keep listening you’ll love it. They successfully blend a variety of styles to create a mellow yet sometimes spiky sound – listen to the ‘The 5th Quarter’ to see what I mean. Strange mix but ultimately satisfying. ‘Independent’ is another fine example and probably their most accessible song (and the claimed Stefan Grappelli influence is evident here). The lyrics have a precise cutting edge: “Got her own razor sharp tailor, gives her main stream respect. A screen siren with a conscience, she’s politically correct.”We’re all different, with different musical backgrounds. Some want nothing but tradition others thrive on the eclectic nature of music. The essential truth is not what you do and how you do it, but that you do it with conviction – the 5th Quarter has conviction by the barrel - and they play some pretty good music too.Tim Carroll FolkWords www.myspace.com/folkwords
