Sitar

About Me

Josh Hajicek, a resident sitarist of New York City, developed a strong interest in East Indian Music at a young age and dedicated his musical ambitions to the strict discipline of sitar. Josh lived and studied with world renowned North Indian classical musicians and sitar players making his knowledge and techniques very refined and aesthetic. His style falls in line with the Imdad Khani Gharana, specifically Gayaki Ang, a very difficult vocal and orthodox style of sitar playing. Josh seamlessly brings a pure Indian classical element to every project and composition he plays. His 15 + years of music experience and 9 years of dedicated Indian music training make him stand out.
Josh has worked and recorded with many renowned eastern and western musicians such as Brian Stoltz (Funky Meters and Neville Brothers), Ustad Shafaatulla Khan (son of Ustad Imrat Khan), Polash Gomes (Rageshree Records), Ragani (International Kirtan Foundation) with Michael Kashou (Garbage), Root Valdez, Hidayat Khan (son of the late Vilayat Khan) and many others. Currently Josh is studying the misunderstood and dying science and art of raga under Amit Chatterjee (Joe Zawinul, Eric Johnson, Nitin Sawhney, Glen Velez, and Trilok Gurtu). Raga, a Sanskrit word meaning color is not a tune, melody, or mode but can be simply thought of as an acoustic method of coloring the listeners mind with an emotion. Josh is an expert in the art of self-expression through the sitar and aims to educate people in the ancient wisdom of North Indian Classical music.
