About Me

I am a university professor, my formal academic training is in anthropology and education with emphasis on the spiritual and religious traditions in Latin America. I have been teaching at the university since 1974. I studied with Mayan Shamans in Guatemala in the 1970s trying to learn the traditional uses of herbal medicine and spirituality. I am a priest of the Lucumi religion also known as Santeria. I am an Omo Yemaya (Oni Oni) initiated in Matanzas in Cuba at the Ile Oba Tola.Maferefun Yemaya!Maferefun Chango!Layout powered by HOT FreeLayouts

My Interests

My main interest has always been to travel to remote places in Latin America and learn the ways of life from the elders. I enjoy gardening and as my friends say I have an amazing green thumb. I am also a photographer and enjoy taking photos from my travels and in my communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Music:

I enjoy all kinds of music but specially World music. I have an extensive collection of Latin music from the oldies to the new. I enjoy Cuban soneros such as Adalberto y su son, Los Van Van, and many others from the islands and the U.S. Reggae, Salsa, dancehall, boleros, and all kinds of music. Jazz is also one of my passions and I like Coltrane, Gato Barbieri, Miles Davis, and more.

Movies:

I recently saw Nada+ a great Cuban film! It was worth the experience. Very poetic and great cinematography.

Books:

My own books of course!

Heroes:

Fidel, Ché, Farabundo Martí, Sandino, Paulo Freire as my teacher.
