Welcome people! My name is Della Hicks-Wilson. Born and raised in the city of London, I currently reside and have for as long as I can remember in the beautiful East London borough of Hackney. I'm a second year English Literature student at the University of Cambridge and an aspiring novelist, poet and journalist. Over the years Iâ€™ve received an award for the best Black History Month poem in the borough of Islington, been published in various local publications and an anthology of poetry entitled Xpressions by Us, performed at open mic poetry events, most notably Verbalized Mindz hosted by performance poet heavy weight Phenzwaan as well as my collegeâ€™s annual poetry evening along side the critically acclaimed Patience Agababi. As a member of the young peopleâ€™s news team Childrenâ€™s Express I had the opportunity to write numerous articles for the column Teen Talk in the national newspaper New Nation including interviews with childrenâ€™s book author Malorie Blackman, Doreen Lawrence and humanitarian Graca Michel. I also reviewed books for the column including Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman and The Life of Stephen Lawrence by Verna Wilkins . I have experience reviewing events for my college magazine including a spoken word evening headlined by the renowned poet Grace Nichols and performance poet Charlie Dark. During my work experience at the lifestyle and entertainment magazine for women of colour, PRIDE, I wrote music reviews and travel articles. Iâ€™ve attended various writing courses and workshops including Rap Meets Poetry with the performance poet legend Adisa. My poetic aspirations are to enter the performance poetry scene as well as being published. I would also like to continue writing art related articles and reviews. At present Iâ€™m in the midst of writing my first novel which will be set in Hackney and concerned with the issues that we Black British people are facing. So continue to watch this space...

My Interests

Everything and anything to do with the arts! I love music, particulary Hip-Hop, my favourite rapper being the lyrical genius Nas. I love films, preferably thought-provoking ones I can nick ideas off for my book! lol and foreign ones! I love watching documentaries because I can look into people's lives (I hope I can make some one day) I love philosophy and thinking about thinking and big concepts like what is happiness! I love writing, poetry and prose! I love reading! I just love words! Sometimes the way they sit together or sound just touches my soul! Its deep!

I'd like to meet:

I would like to network with fellow writers and performance poets to share advice, critique or opportunities.

I would welcome the opportunity for my poetry to be published by editors of magazines or publishing houses.

I would like to collaborate with others artists or producers to make spoken word tracks.

I would like to talk to people who live in inner city London to help with research for my first novel.

I would like to meet anyone with similar interests as myself.
