Back when she was only a “light shower,” Storm used to make mixtapes of her favorite songs and tried to deejay on a Fischer Price toy turntable with a scratched 2 Live Crew record. But it was in 1997, when she was a freshman at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, that Storm was able to do something about her love of music. She began her career in radio at the college station, WAMF, now WANM. Initially brought in to be a character on a friend’s show, she stayed and eventually became an on-air personality. Also, while at the station, Storm took advantage of the fact that the station still played music off of turntables and would practice for hours mixing acapellas over instrumentals on the two turntables in the production room, using the console instead of a DJ mixer.
Impatient as always, Storm was itching to move from college to commercial radio, and in 1999 her opportunity arose. She was invited to join the staff of the now defunct WVHT as a weekend on-air personality. She was quickly promoted to doing nights and then moved to middays. Although appreciative of her opportunities in Tallahassee, Storm felt the need to make a move, so she enrolled in a Master’s program at New York University in 2001. While in school she stayed true to the game, interning at Atlantic Records main office for Chris Washington’s college marketing program and in MTV’s promotions department. In 2002 however, money talked and she left New York altogether. Taking a break from school and ending her internship at MTV, she took a job with Pro Motion, Inc., a mobile marketing company. A change from the music industry, Storm traveled across the country non-stop for four months promoting Campbell’s Label for Education. With the tour ending in late 2002 and no place to call home, Storm moved back to Tallahassee. True to form, she got a job at Sam Goody’s as soon as she moved back. She didn’t stay long though, TJ Chapman of TJ’s DJ’s asked her to work for him and she gratefully obliged. Storm also got back in radio, working as a weekend personality on the then brand new WWLD. She soon was offered a promotion to morning show producer/news director for the Doug Banks Morning Show, which she still holds down. In 2005, after a semester of flying to New York from Tallahassee for class once a week, she finished grad school and received her Master of Arts degree with a focus on media consolidation. Just recently, Storm was able to add another accomplishment to her resume when the team at WWLD proved that Blazin 102.3 is undeniably the #1 station in Tallahassee for hip hop and R&B, with the changing of its direct competitor (WBWT) into a talk format station.
Although she had been practicing deejaying at home for the past eight years, Storm never aggressively pursued becoming a radio, club and mixtape DJ, but all that changed in 2006. Now, Storm has released three succesful mixtapes, deejays during the Ol School Lunch Mix and Ol School Sundays on Blazin 102.3, and holds down a club spot every Saturday night at Mt. Zion and deejays various other events! Storm is also a proud member of the Bum Squad DJz.
