Here is a great series by the Miami Herald on the African Diaspora in Latin America. It is a good way to get informed on these Afro-descendants if one does not have much knowledge about this population. Hopefully we’ll get future articles about the Diaspora in less familiar countries like Bolivia.
Please click on the images to read the articles and the interactive map. These numbers are estimations of African slaves that were initially brought to each country. Enjoy!

The Afro-Bolivian population is actually more like 35,000. Please note that they are currently not included in the national census for Bolivia (along with smaller Indigenous nations beyond Aymarans and Quechuans), which is one of the most important issues that they are currently fighting for.

My Interests

WHAT IS SAYA? (pronounced SI-YA)
Although the real Afro-Bolivian Saya is becoming increasingly popular, most Bolivians still think of Saya as dancing around wildly in BLACK FACE, as seen in this YouTube video. They say that they do this in appreciation for their black population, however this is a form of ignorance that actually pokes fun at Afro-Bolivians:
