Mashups are considered "illegal" why?? simply because it's very very hard or impossible to clear rights... (you can easily count the official releases..on one hand, maybe one and half?) but ""tolerated""..if it's not for commercial purpose...
I love to do mashups but as many others, i refuse to make money, with what i'm doing if rights are not cleared and if nothing is done officially
Every real masher/bootlegger will tell you that he makes mashups as a music,mixing,remixing,mashing.... lover first, mixing different sources together, with or without own add. production to make something "new", something different, and sometimes it produces unexpected result.
it's for fun, .. i'm not selling cd's or mixtapes at the corner of the street, no Paypal, no add banners...only for fun :)
I do not claim to improve anything, i just want to do something "different"
hoping this won't offend the legal owners! if problem with any file (...), i have a bouton called "Delete file" ;))
but...you may find some of my mashups released on vynil (by ???) and sold by some f***** online record stores as JACKSON 5 vs FREEMASONS - "Abc now"and also sold on myspace profiles.. i'm VERY sorry for that, i never released any mashup on vynil or cd ..[Edit April 24] ..that's why all the files will be converted to low quality..."thief stolen!" yeah ok..

anyway 99% of mashups are downloadable for free, just googelize !!!!!!
..if you want to pay 0,99 cents or more for a mashup (downloadable for free on the web and something which shouldn't be sold) it's your choice, but maybe it would be better to donate to charity associations,..there's many people in need...

34, male living in Belgium, I started to make my first attempts of "mega-mixes" when i was 15-16 (with a Radio/Tape recorder ) scanning the local radio stations in search of the hits of the moment (rec,pause,rec, pause, play..mmwouaaaaaaaaaaah!!! funny :))
At the same time I discovered the DMC (Rules!),Ben Liebrand's Grandmixes & Oncle Ben,remixes and other Dmc's remixers or not, trying to understand?
"waaaw how they do that??!!" blablabla ...i've tryed, re-tryed, and finally, i "saw the light"! lool since then from producing tools to producing tools from amateur to professionnal gear (from Amiga 1200 + Pro/Fasttracker freewares to the next generation digital/audio tools)..blabla you know what, i'm sure ;)
btwmany thx to Bruno who tolds me one day in the early 90's "of course! you can do your own music with a pc!! let me show you..." (OMG!) :)))
I started to produce for radios in 1992 and now since 1994 it's my full time job.. so i should be a happy man, isn't it? ;-))
I make my own soundz too, (no projects for the moment, anyway it would be Trance or Club style)
Now i'm a "mashup period", how many time will it last? who knows...... hum what can i say..? hum...pfff... ask me? ;)

Sometimes I have to use/make homemade-pellas (DIY-center channel extracting)..also, 99% of the instrumentals are from cd's ,extracted,re-edited, (to cut the parts i don't need) to make a new structures, because the instrumental doesn't always exist...some mashups include own additional production, (drums,instruments,fx...) some are partially replayed.
