New cd 'DOCUMENTA' (2006.09.11) is a good illustration of the track they have followed the past ten years
From the beginning they were different. They were the first group to sell a folk CD with the success of a rock album. They were the first to sing about little maidens and milk churns without sounding sanctimonious. At Rock Werchter they were the first in their genre to open a window. And time after time, Jorunn, Annelies and Nathalie surprised their audience by presenting yet another version of a song. From the beginning, Laïs expressed their instinctive aversion to fixed paths.
Documenta is a good illustration of the past ten years. We hear the hesitant but at the same time very motivated voices of the young girls in their early stage. In those days, Laïs used to do the supporting act for Kadril, the group which discovered them, at cultural centres all over Flanders. The three of them simply sung a cappella, and they still do so today. Their voices are like a rock they always return to. That is how they became one of the post powerful live bands in Flanders in 2005.
But to Laïs, music is also and in the first place the communication with the audience, whether it is in a small church or at a big festival, and with other artists. Three girls offering harmonious singing: many liked the idea and a whole series of collaborations followed, some of which were recorded here. They gave the group the opportunity to explore new possibilities, taking distance from their own approach. It paid off, because the Laïs of tomorrow drew its conclusions and is breaking new grounds again.
Twelve years after they sang first tunes in Gooik, the girls have become women. Their voices are more mature and circle around each other like birds on the wing. Should the real Laïs still stand up? Hardly 30, they can already look back on a nice career. We are halfway, they say. We'll wait and see if that is true (they've never been very good at planning). Whatever comes, as long as it is sincere... Always welcome: this is Laïs.
