David works within a group of musicians, Delight, who specialize in both songwriting and improvisation. They try to make their performances a mix of these two arts. In terms of overall sound, style, and approach, Delight's music could be characterized as a mixture of folk, rock, funk, and jazz, bringing both the substantive musicality and subjective feeling of these genres to the forefront.
Our compositions are thought-out and based on a classical or pop tradition, using chords that are either tried and true or compositionally innovative. Our lyrics are poetic yet innovative and thought-provoking, so our songs tend to throw a curveball and give the listener something "original" but not too foreign to the ear.
"Another Man's Shoes," one of the songs you can listen to above, takes you on the ride of waking up "in another man's shoes" as if you were another person. It asks you to imagine a hypothetical scenario of life as that person for one day and the implications of such a one-day alternative consciousness of being a different person and how that might play out. Ultimately, the emotional underpinnings of the song strives to bring out what the track is really asking: do you feel comfortable being you? And hopes to provide the listener with the answer: yes, and if you don't, you should, and here's why. The song was written and produced by Eric Weiler, and Doug Mezz sings on the track.
On the live stage, Delight's fusion of composition and improvisation comes to life in a new form. Bands like the Grateful Dead have done it before, and it is a common practice in jazz, but our sound isn't jazz exactly. What we play draws more from diverse American traditions than just one genre, so our music almost defies genres as a diverse fusion of musical styles. We really play a mix of pop, rock, jazz, funk, alternative, reggae, R&B, Motown, gospel, Dixieland, blues, soul, classical, acoustic, and folk.
"New Russian Blues" featuring three members of Delight, David Mesirow, Eric Weiler, and Noah Cahan, seems to defy genres. This particular instrumental tune, available for listening in the music player above, involves improvisation over a compositional idea. The track seems to mix jazz, blues, classical, and folk because of its use of improvised ideas, song form, chord voicings, and idiomatic sound.
We are both instrumentalists and experimentalists with our music, not afraid to stretch, even dismiss common musical conventions. Delight's innovative and thought-provoking music is a means to an end and an end in itself. We believe the music is good and pure on its own from a musical standpoint, but we also think our music will lead to great things socially and help send positive messages to the public.
