Treibsand is part of 'alternative tagungsstaette' which
started 1978 in Luebeck as a squatted house in the middle of the old part of the
city. Due to problems with neighbours (of course) it has moved after a couple of
years to the place where you can find it now. The 'new' area was part of the
ancient railway station in 18xx and later the residence for the local dump cars.
The surrounding was underdeveloped, no stable roads a couple of railway tracks
were blocking the access to the main city. Hotels, parking lots and congress
hall that you can see today were not even planned at those days, there wasn't a
single tree on the whole ground (you will be surprised how it looks now).
Apart from the people who live there, the public part of 'alternative' consists
in a cafe (cafe brazil) a pub (VeB) and the mighty grand ballroom called
treibsand (in english quicksand) ;-)
Treibsand is run by a more or less steady circle of 20 to 30 people all with
complete individual and different backgrounds, music preferences, jobs etc,
mainly united by the idea of running a 100% non-profit music club. Everybody at
treibsand (and the rest of alternative of course) works completely for no charge
which includes technicians, booker, promoter, bar people and everything else.
This fact causes some differences to commercial clubs that you can easily
imagine, things like cleaning up the yard e.g. are done rarely which leads to a
sloppy punk rock look, or how 'Bucket', singer from the toasters (NY) put it
when he entered for the first time „This place misses a womans hands touch“. We
think it's just cool like it is, working for free (and your 'thank you' after a
good show) leads to a nice and familiar atmosphere which makes a good gig really
enjoyable (and yes, we will sure clean up next week). Low prices at the door and
the bar and of course the great deals and guarantees we can offer you are
another result of this politic. Money that is left to us is exclusively used to
run and enhance treibsand and alternative, leftovers are given to charity
projects, for ex.
we are supporting a home for orphaned children in Kenia on a regular base. Shows
do mainly take place on weekends as we all have to work, go to school or
university and so on, we have enough band offers to do a three band gig every
day in the year though. Luebeck is a nice city at the border of the baltic sea,
so we love to take a summer break as well (mainly during school holidays) and
have party on the beach or do anything else than organising gigs ;-)
Though we are running the place as a non-profit thing we try to be as
professional as possible (and reasonable) for a concert hall of this size.
