'You gotta love livin' baby, 'cause dyin' is a pain in the ass'--Frank Sinatra

About Me

High adventure thrives in the 21st century!

Rob Hanes Adventures is an all-ages comic-book series about a globetrotting private eye and troubleshooter. (Someone quite aptly described the series recently as "Tintin meets Indiana Jones!") Under the auspices of worldwide Justice International, Rob travels the world on assignment, facing adventure, intrigue and romance at every turn! The series is published by WCG Comics and is also now available as a free web comic !

Issue 10 was the last issue to be released and can be previewed here . (Issue 11 is coming soon and can be previewed here .) You can also see a gallery of my work by clicking the image above right or by clicking here .

I’ve been drawing comics most of my life, beginning with self-made comics I made for friends in junior high school in Staten Island, New York, where I grew up. I created the series during this time when I fantasized about doing a syndicated newspaper adventure strip. Through college I kept a sketchbook and filed away story ideas for future reference. After college, I began working on the series more seriously and steadily improved my craft. Though several companies expressed interest in it, I ultimately chose to self-publish the series beginning in 1991. Though I don’t release issues as quickly as I should, I’ve nevertheless worked continuously on the series, producing nearly 25 stories and 400 pages over the years (and still counting!). I’m proud to have a strong following, and to count many pros as fans of my work who appreciate the tradition I’m working in.

For more information about the series, including sample stories and art, check out my Previews page at the company website. All back issues of the series are still available thru my online store ! By the way, every story is self-contained!

I'd like to meet:

Living in L.A., it's fun to see entertainment figures and celebrities, but our culture is way too celebrity-obsessed. So no one really comes to mind -- I've met everyone I want to and need to!

Music:

Beatles and Sinatra, baby! My tastes are broad, ranging from film scores and musical soundtracks, to jazz, pop, rock, and Rat Pack/'60s lounge.

My last fixations were Ben Folds Five's Whatever and Ever Amen CD (the one with the extra tracks), Tenacious D , William Shatner's Has Been , and Burt Bacharach.

I'm also into Japanese pop music ("jpop") and jazz, though I'm not as knowledgeable in those areas as I'd like to be.

Movies:

Too many and diverse to name here, but I usually name Lawrence of Arabia as my favorite film; others on my personal favorite list include The Apartment, Casablanca, Manhattan, Diner, Three Days of the Condor, Ronin, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Electric Dreams, the Year of Living Dangerously, and Hong Kong action films. My guilty pleasure of the moment are Asian romantic comedies. Though I always enjoy arthouse, foreign and challenging films, as I've gotten older, I've found I have less interest in seeing films that are either harrowing or violent. I get to the movie theater so infrequently, I want to relax and be entertained!

Television:

Flight of the Conchords, 30 Rock, The Office, Mad Men.

Books:

Last completed The Beatles: The Biography by Bob Spitz; Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life by Steve Martin; Pictures at a Revolution by Mark Harris and Men of Tomorrow by Gerard Jones. Also recently read Meanwhile... by R.C. Harvey (Milton Caniff biography). Favorite all-time books/stories include: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien; Nostromo by Joseph Conrad, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway (short story).

Heroes:

The cartooning pantheon: Milton Caniff , Alex Toth , Will Eisner , Roy Crane

I'm at a weird place right now artistically. While I don't think it qualifies as "artist's block" (which I have experienced), I've been unhappy and tentative about my inking the past several pages.I'v...
