Recently surfacing on the Canadian music scene, songwriter Luke Nares is lending himself wholeheartedly to listeners everywhere. As his writing style stands alone his music provokes nostalgia in its timeless feel and familiarity. With a university background in English and Theatre Studies, Luke uses unique metaphors and vivid imagery, as his songs set the scene for change. Influenced by artists such as Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews and Sam Beam of Iron and Wine, Luke takes great pride in carefully fusing music and lyrics to create intricate and meaningful songs. Balancing between personal stories of struggle and passion and universal themes of mindfulness and renewal, Luke’s beliefs reflect those of a growing new age audience. Underlining the neglect of responsible expression of emotion as a direct cause of social inadequacies, Luke’s writing urges his generation towards conscious minded action. Exploring a variety of musical feels from bluegrass to reggae to blues to pop, Luke’s music insistently embodies the message of the song. Pulled from his rootsy/blues song “Break”, this excerpt describes corporate suburbia as Luke sees it: “This place has got us kids in chains, where we can’t grow and we can’t change. Paving shadows over planted seeds, we hold our breath as we pretend to breathe.” As the acoustic slide twangs an aggressive melody, as the chorus chimes in: “Rain is rust and thoughts are thunder in this prison. Rain is rust and it will break … before we’re gone.”
Last year marked the release of Luke’s debut album, Move To Stay Warm, followed by a cross Canada tour. Performing in a rock band, as part of an acoustic duo with long time friend, Dave Lotimer or as a solo artist, Luke’s shows have been hailed as being both emotionally powerful and thought provoking. Under the fading light of western society’s rein, Luke sings a story: “We are Kings of the world in armor of leaves and stones from our mother. We’d die before we’d crown another and we’d kill just to live forever. We are kings of the world, but I can hear them whisper and you can hear them whisper but only if you listen…” Keep listening for Luke’s next album to be released this coming summer of 2008.
