From a thug to a b-boy, from a b-boy to an MC, from an MC to a trackmaker, from a trackmaker to a producer, from a producer to a label owner… This is not just another biography. It’s a great success story, an epic of a man who vowed to live and die with hip-hop.
Thugged-Out Boy’s Chance Meeting with Hip-Hop
The history of B-Fresh is equivalent to the life story of Bell. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Bell was a regular as a teenager at a disco where all the thugs hung out. At the time, the moves like Robot Dance and Funky Fruit (the precursor to Lock Dance), and Hama Cha Cha were in full swing, and Bell devoted all his time into clubbing and dancing.
In 1986, while Bell was chilling at the usual disco, something caught him off guard and left him speechless. The disco was playing the film “Wild Styleâ€, which would change his life forever. He got into breaking and kept on practicing day in and day out. Before long, he met a black dancer called Wally B, who was showing the techniques like Pop Locking and Electric Waving at a disco in Yokoyama named La Moon. Bell hited it off with him instantly, and learned Top Locking from him. He soon began his career as a dancer.
Then, he started to show up at “Hokoten†in Harajuku (a now defunct vehicle-free area). Dancing and networking at the mecca of the Japanese hip-hop, he was introduced to the kindred spirits such as Crazy-A, DJ Krush, Mabo (hailing from Hiroshima), Sam from TRF, Ohji from B-Bop Crew, Cake-K and Muro. They are the first generation of the Japanese hip-hoppers.
B-Fresh 3 Era --- Creating Fresh Style with DJ Krush, Muro and Cake-K
In 1988, B-Fresh was formed. The early members included Bell, DJ Krush and Bang (Krush’s younger brother). Bell rocked the mic while the other two worked the turntables. The alias Bell was given to him by one of his friends because he wouldn’t leave home without his Kangol bell hat, plus his family name (Suzuki) contained the word meaning bell (suzu). The group later welcomed a new MC named Muro, who they had known from “Hokotenâ€. Adding new artists such as DJ Seiji, Cake-K and DJ Beat, they also started the crew named B-Fresh Posse. At live shows, Crazy-A also got involved to liven up their performances. Bell helped establish the style of after-midnight club events by hosting parties at Club Citta’ in Kawasaki.
With DJ Krush as his main partner, Bell competed in many contests, and swept most of the titles. His reputation spread widely, not only through the club circuit but also with the help of media, mainly the magazines. It seemed like everything was going great in Bell’s career before something happened to drastically change his view and style. One day, while B-Fresh was performing at a club called Inkstick in Takeshiba, somebody in the front row dissed him by saying “You are just jacking the style of black people after all.†Bell was wearing a Kangol hat, a fake gold chain, and a pair of shell-top Adidas with no shoelaces. They were the staples of hip-hoppers at the time, yet he was also feeling there might be a new direction a Japanese hip-hopper should pursue. The harsh word from the audience shocked him entirely, but in a way encouraged him to push the envelope to create the unique style as a hip-hopper born and raised in Japan. “I thought it might not be keeping it real for me to hang onto this style. I used to be a thug doing all the dirt you could imagine and having all these tattoos. I started rapping because I wanted to get out of the negative cycle of being poor,†says Bell. He decided to be real in his own right, and stripped off everything that reminded of American hip-hop. He embarked on the journey of finding the Japanese rendition of it.
Departure, Quest and New Beginning
In 1991, DJ Krush and Muro parted ways with B-Fresh 3 because of creative differences. Bell, along with Cake-K and DJ Beat made a fresh start as B-Fresh, and signed a major deal with King Records. B-Fresh introduced a series of innovative attempts that hadn’t been done by any other Japanese hip-hoppers. They combined singing and rapping, and they also fused DJing, rapping and dancing all together seamlessly at live shows. “B-Fresh 3 and B-Fresh were two totally different breeds in some senses,†recalls Bell. “Still, I wouldn’t take anything away from what I had done with Krush and Muro, because the time with them was very meaningful. Many people told me back then ‘B-Fresh 3 was by far better than B-Fresh’ but I believed in the potential of Cake-K and DJ Beat. And I knew we were heading for the right direction, so no matter what people said to me, it didn’t faze or hurt me.†They recorded their first album “Brown Eyed Soul†in Los Angeles, and once it was released it became a Japanese hip-hop classic. In 1992, they released their second album “Be Radio!†immediately followed by the “Be Radio!†remix album.
In 1993 while at the peak of their career, B-Fresh shocked the fans by announcing that the band would take a break. Bell started to get his hands full with trackmaking. Investing 1 million yen (US$10,000) into equipment such as Akai MPC 60-II (which would later become MPC 3000), S-900, S-3000, and Bass Station (keyboards loaded with bass sound sources), he taught himself the art of beat making. In 1998, he started another career as a producer to help other artists’ career by providing his insight and experience as an artist. He produced the female R&B group called Slow. Featuring the singer Masami, Slow’s single became a huge hit. Backed by the R&B boom in the scene, it sold more than 10,000 copies (in vinyl only) and became the most inquired about song at USEN (cable radio station). Bell also founded his own label, Shogunate Entertainment, where he showcased his talent as a producer. Furthermore, B-Fresh released their long-awaited third album “B-Fresh†after a six-year hiatus. The album became the timeless work of art representing B-Fresh to the fullest.
Becoming Top-Notch Producer, and Helping Others Out
The year 1999 saw two important releases for Bell. The first was B-Fresh’s best of album, and the second was the cover album called “7 On 7,†where he brought seven trackmakers and seven female singers together and executive produced the whole project. Big names such as Ryoji from Rip Slyme, DJ Yutaka, Yoggy from East End, Monch Tanaka and Slow came aboard, and the result made a big impact on the music scene.
In 2001, Bell produced Daidarabocchi’s album, which was released on King Records. The sequel of “7 On 7†was also released around the same time.
In 2003, B-Fresh made a sensational comeback after five years of silence with the historical ‘Pump It Up.’ The track featured not only their peers such as Crazy-A, Muro and Cake-K, but also brought in younger artists such as Little from Kick the Can Crew, Miss Monday, Boy-Ken, and Yamada Man. In the same year, B-Fresh’s fourth album “5th Element†was released.
In 2004, Bell produced two underground hip-hop groups named Prime Ground and Lyric Art, and both of them released successful EP’s. Bell also organized a star-studded charity project called “Stop AIDS Club Movement.†This was the club scene’s response and approach to the issues of AIDS.
Bell at Present --- Pursuing the Infinite Possibilities of Hip-Hop
Bell moved beyond the realm of hip-hop and also got involved with the reggae scene. In 2005, he and Chappie released a Japanese reggae compilation “Gimi Di Lighter†featuring the up-and-coming artists. Bell also supervised the charity album “Save the Japanese Children†with DJ Yutaka, and released it from his Shogunate Label. Among all the great tracks by the hot artists on the album, ‘One’ by Jin with Corn Head became a smash hit. His label also released the EP’s of young artists Shizoo and Fu, who was on “Gimi Di Lighter†project. With his creative energy flowing, he wasn’t ready to sit down and breathe yet. He released the records of Corn Head, Yamada Man from Rappagariya, Mine-Shin Hold on his label by the end of the year. Then in 2006, Shogunate released the full album of Corn Head, the label compilation, and “Hotta Fireâ€, a project in the same vein as “Gimi Di Lighter.†This time the compilation featured major reggae artists such as Moomin, Corn Head, Rankin Taxi and Chappie. The sequel to “Hotta Fire†is scheduled for release in July 2007. Newly found music production company Brown Eyes Entertainment manages B-Fresh, Corn Head, the rap group WM49 and a brand-new singer named Yuka. The industry’s expectation is very high for the releases of their works.
“When I was younger, I made a vow to myself that I would keep on doing hip-hop until the day I die,†Bell says. “To have such longevity, I figured I’d have to know how to manage my creativity and my business. I learned the business side of being an artist along the way, and this is why I founded Shogunate and Brown Eyes. It might have taken me a very long time to get where I am at now, but this is what I swore to do, so it’s all good.â€
In 2007, B-Fresh will release new material for the first time in three years. The EP and LP are set to be released in September and November respectively. Bell created the Japanese hip-hop scene from scratch with his fellow artists, and greatly contributed to the development of the scene. Now he is ready to put together all his experiences and knowledge. Be on the look out for the freshest sound from B-Fresh.
