Wings on an old creation

About Me

I was born in Kyoto, Japan, but moved to Seattle, Washington before the age of one. Fitting into both but neither culture influences my thoughts, but so does being nostalgic, curious, a sweet-tooth, a traveler, and the offspring of hippies. Songwriting has been a natural process. Years of classical and jazz piano lessons combined with experiments in poetry. I still remember singing my songs for the first time to an empty room. That feeling keeps me going. Piano and voice are my main instruments but I enjoyed adding guitar, bass, cello, and drums on Curious Creature (2007). I am currently performing across Japan with my band while studying Ethnomusicology at Kyoto University. Music's quite the passport. Thanks to everyone who made me feel at home this year!PERFORMANCES & COLLABORATIONS In the past two years I’ve performed in the US (Los Angeles and Seattle) and Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto). Some of my favorite shows have been at the Hotel Café, Blue Note Japan, and the Sundance Film Festival. I have been lucky to perform with Colbie Caillat, Jessie Baylin, and Meiko."Sunrise" in Michael Kang’s West 32nd (premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival), “One Good Song” in the award-winning film, Dragon of Love (on the Sundance Channel) and in “Play the Game” (2008) by Marc Fienberg.Vocalist for EPIC Records Japan, Jazztronik and Shing02."Armed with a piano and all-embracing musical training, Emi Meyer showcases her distinct vocals, personal lyrics and soaring compositions with a sound spanning folk, jazz, rock, and pop." –Experience Music Project Sound Off! 2007

living in Tokyo

I admit it, I'm a baby to the city life. Everything's a few minutes away: the subway, the theater, the imperial park, the tower.  Cars start driving around 5am, after stopping around 3am. The sub...

Summer Tours

Arrived in Tokyo last night.  It's been raining, which makes this new city feel a bit like home.  There's nothing like bobbing umbrellas, the quiet that comes along with it, and the sound of...

It's been a mix of strangeness and familiarity... Home is never exactly the same once you've been away-- if only because you see the same things with different eyes. Coming off of the plane, I made&nb...
