About Me

I play saxophone and clarinet. I love all music, but jazz is my main form of expression. I've just successfully finished a studying for Contemporary World Jazz degree at Truro College / Plymouth Univeristy and am about to undertake an MA in Ethnomusicology. I am now teaching for Cornwall Music Service. I have been gigging for a number of years playing duos, trios and larger ensembles in a range of venues, mainly in the Midlands and Cornwall. I also work as an arranger and I have produced arrangements currently being used by the Knee High Theatre Group, based in Cornwall.

Band Members: I play saxophone in a popular local band called The Dirty Livin' Rhythm Band. I have to say its the most fun I've ever had. If you ever get the chance to see the band down here in the southwest, you wouldn't want to miss it. A band of pure energy... thrash jazz at its best! I also play in a quartet with singer Sarah Glayzer. In this line up I mainly play clarinet... I honestly believe that I must be the only person in Cornwall who plays clarinet apart from the trad players. I'm also the leader of the Dan Hughes Quartet based in the Midlands and I was also a founder member and front man for a jazz / funk / fusion band called TJQ in Cornwall. I dont just play jazz, I am also a member of Bombrassa which is a eclectic mix of brass band, folk and world music. Bombrassa is another band based in Cornwall. It was a band that was originally commissioned by the Eden Project where we played four nights a week for three months tying in to the Time of Gifts season. I have also done session work with various artists including local favourites “Rairbirds” and performing in the pit at Hall for Cornwall for the new musical “Turning of the Tide” I have also had the honour of working with many outstanding professionals such as Lillian Boutté (voc), Thomas L'Etienne (sx), Viv Rodd (pno), Andy Crowdy (bs), Denny Ilett (gt).
Influences: Louis Armstrong, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Curtis Mayfield, Frank Sinatra, George Benson, John Coltrane and my good friends Lillian Boutté, Tanya Boutté, Thomas L'Etienne, Tom Quirke, Andy "nylon bandit" Bunce, Tom "two skins" Jackson, Hugo "the boss" Pulley and Canadian Dave. Their musical talent is a constant influence!!!
Sounds Like: Depends on what idiom I'm playing. Could sound like anything from traditional clarinet to hard driving funk on sax.
