FlyingGirl Art - A wee bit of hope for those seeking more

About Me

My name is Melissa and I am a professional fine-artist from central Minnesota. I am passionate about art, music, movies and books. And I mostly prefer the company of animals to people. Not because I dislike people. Maybe because of the artist in me? I am ridiculously sensitive to light, color, sound, emotion, etc. And people take me away from myself. Sometimes violently. It can take me days to recover from a large group gathering - I get so lost in everyone else's experiences and the overwhelming amount of sensory input. But animals soothe me and keep me touch with the best parts of myself. So I spend a lot of time working in my studio, playing with my furry friends, enjoying the company of my friends and neighbors and occasionally visiting with family.

I do not drink, smoke, or use drugs of any kind. I have had plenty of self-destructive habits, though, and I am still working my way through some of them. My desires and "dangerous" impulses do not scare me like they once did. Time has taught me to appreciate my wild parts.

I am most comfortable around things and people and places and animals that are clearly flawed or damaged in some way. Perfection makes me nervous.

As my artwork shows, I am deeply spiritual. I am not; however, religious. While I am thrilled to know that my images bring comfort to folks of all religions, I do not wish to be saved or converted and will not return emails with language of that sort.

My experience here on MySpace has been fun so far. I have come here mainly for the blogging feature, but I am delighted with all the great art stuff on here, too. And with all of the neat people I am "meeting" in this odd virtual world.

Thank you for visiting my page. Please stop by www.FlyingGirl.com to learn more about my work.

My Interests

Important info about "friends" and "adds", comments and emails ... I enjoy surfing this neat place and inviting other creative thinkers to join my "friends" list. So I am pleased to say my friends list is something of a treasure trove. Come browse here anytime you are bored or in need of inspiration. You will find some great artists and musicians and writers. Being the friendly sort and an ardent supporter of free speech, I will accept most add requests even if the sensibilities and opinions expressed on those pages are not in sync with my own. So there may be some surprises in my friends list as well. The two exceptions to my lenient friends policy would be if I find your page to be patently offensive. I am not easily offended, so that would be a rare case. Or if you are just trying to sell crap or trick people into clicking links. I love to read your comments and appreciate the fun stuff you have shared in my comments section. Thank you! Unfortunately, some folks have had trouble loading my page because of all the code-heavy stuff posted in my comments section. And I recently discovered code in a comment that caused my entire profile to display all screwy. In order to keep my page relatively fast loading and somewhat manageable in length, I have decided to limit comments to regular text (no html) and to delete comments after 7 days. I hope that does not upset anyone. This time frame applies only to comments on my profile page. I will leave blog comments and pic comments up indefinitely. And you can still put html in your comments for pics and blog pages. I am trying desperately to scale my life back a bit so that I have the energy to care for my health and feed my spirit. In order to make time for nature and quiet, I must spend less time sitting on my rump in front of the computer. Sadly, that means I cannot promise a response to all of the emails and comments that I receive. I am VERY sorry for this. Hopefully, the day will come when I can hire staff to help me with my work and then I will have the time to play on here more. And to be a better friend. But for now, I must admit my limitations. I thank you all for your emails and comments. I read them all and appreciate each and every word. I will respond to as many as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I'd like to meet:

Hopeful people, helpful people, people who believe.

Music:

I love music and I am sure I will forget some of my favorites when composing this list, but here are some of the talented folks I listen to... Shawn Colvin, Son Volt, John Hiatt, Neil Diamond, Joan Armatrading, Martin Zellar, Mindy Smith, John Gorka, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Black, Glen Phillips, Tracy Chapman, Lyle Lovett, Indigo Girls, Tanita Tikaram, Van Morrison, Nanci Griffith, Loudon Wainwright III, Lloyd Cole, Johnny Cash, Vic Chesnutt, Leonard Cohen, Kathleen Edwards, Lowen & Navarro, New Order, Death Cab for Cutie, Dog's Eye View, Sting, Paul Simon, David Wilcox, Yaz, Toni Childs, Phranc, Richard Thompson, Ani DiFranco, The Roches, Josh Joplin Group, Cat Stevens, Bob Mould, Keb Mo, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Billie Holiday, Kasey Chambers, Lucinda Williams, Sugar

Movies:

Oh movies.... I cannot imagine life without movies. Movies are the best therapy for me. I love to escape into films.

Here are just a few of my favorites... Cast Away, Dead Man Walking, Lovely and Amazing, My Own Private Idaho, Black Snake Moan, Lost in Translation, About Schmidt, Quills, My Life as a House, The Last Samurai, What Dreams May Come, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Harold and Maude, Shrek, Big Fish, Monsters Inc., Ghandi, Rushmore, Bagdad Cafe, The Libertine, American Beauty, The Station Agent, Phenomenon, The Fisher King, Pirates of the Caribbean, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Love Actually, City of Angels, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being There, The Shipping News, Shawshank Redemption, Shakes the Clown, Prelude to a Kiss, and the first two Spiderman movies.

Television:

I do not watch television much anymore. About all I watch with regularity are political shows about the '08 race.

Books:

There are so many books that have helped me and changed me and given me hope. Here are just a few... Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Little Prince, Conversations with God, The Tao of Pooh, The Man Who Fell in Love With the Moon, Long Quiet Highway, When Food Is Love

I have also been known to enjoy an occasional trashy murder mystery/thriller novel.

Heroes:

I am not sure what happened to my HEROES section. It disappeared! I will rewrite it soon. Until then, here are some links I would like to share.
