Start From Scratch Records is an independent record label born in Hong Kong with the simple goal of releasing records by local Hong Kong bands for the world to hear. We're starting with giving an opportunity for some local hardcore bands to unleash their sounds, and hopefully in the future we'll be able to take on other Hong Kong bands of other genre's.
Hardcore in Hong Kong began in 1999 based on the idea of community and positivity. In the past 7 years hardcore has progressed very slowly in this city. A small number of bands have come and gone, and very few have been able to take hardcore in Hong Kong to another level. Even fewer have been able to actually release music. One band in particular was 5 Disciplines, a band that was loved by many for their spirit, music and attitude. As of January 2006 the band had disbanded leaving just a single MP3 of a song aptly entitled Mourn to finish off their short-lived legacy.
There are many reasons for the slow progress of hardcore here. We think a major reason is because one important thing has been missing in Hong Kong a local hardcore record label that supports local bands by passionately and sincerely helping bands release their music for the hardcore listening public in Hong Kong, and more importantly, to the hardcore listening public of the world.
In these past few years a few of Hong Kongs hardcore bands have released music. Bands such as Irresistible Hearts, King Ly Chee and Shepherds the Weak have released independently their own albums and EPs. Even though these releases have been successful in many ways, each one of these bands had to deal with their own difficulties that come with producing, marketing, distributing, and selling their albums. If all these bands had more help with the entire process, the end result may have been even more rewarding. But all these bands who have released CDs in Hong Kong have one thing that is incredibly valuable knowledge. All these bands now have the knowledge of what it takes to release an album here.
This is where the idea of Start From Scratch Records enters the picture. We have realized that the time is right to bring all these bands together with all their strengths and experiences, and create a record label in Hong Kong based on community spirit.
