This rare recording was made at a studio in London in 1999. The instrumental, written by Gary was always played as a duet with Bob during Bob’s U.K. concerts during the 1990s. Although it became a great favourite with audiences it was never made available on CD, or vinyl for that matter. Now, it is available, in it’s entirety, for the first time, as a download from the Document Records web site.

Reverend Gary Davis ~ Manchester Free Trade Hall 1964
D ocument is pleased to present an exclusive, never before released CD of the Reverend Gary Davis. His first visit to the UK took place in 1964, as a Member of the Blues and Gospel Caravan, unused to such arduous touring conditions his performances were often patchy, fortunately this is one of the finest from that first visit. Recorded live in the Manchester Free Trade Hall his Gospel pieces are quite superb, indeed this whole CD represents Gary Davis at his majestic best. As Bob Groom ( sleeve note writer and then audience member) notes: "it sounds fresh and vital with Miss Gibson (his guitar) talking to him throughout. With "Come on up, Sonny Terry", Gary annouces the arrival on stage of his old playing partner. Their playing meshes perfectly throughout." Mississippi Blues Volume 4
T his album was originally released in 1987 as DLP 519 during Document Records vinyl release period, prior to the change over to CD format. The opportunity to release this album has allowed us to include take 1 of Robert Johnson’s “Traveling Riverside Blues”. This track having not been released as part of Johnson’s original output was issued for the first time on Document’s “Too Late, Too Late” Volume 11 DOCD-5625. Tracks 7 and 10 by Robert Johnson have been brought together with this compilation from elsewhere in the Document Catalogue. Tracks 22 and 23 by Robert Lockwood Jr. are new editions to the Catalogue. The album presents a fine demonstration of how the raw country blues of the deep south was swept along by the great migration north where it meta morphed into the powerful electric blues of Chicago which then went on to effect the music of generations around the world.
