Lapis Serpentis

Nacht - Folk

About Me

Lapis Serpentis, enchanting Voices, ancient Instruments and the rich cultural influence of medieval Europe, lead you the way in a long lost world of myth and magic.

This young Band revives century old melodies, composes music inspired by living traditions and transforms well known songs into very own interpretations. Archaic tunes and modern arrangments let you dream, dance or drift into a magical world. Discover nearly lost ethnic instruments, like the moldavian overtone flute Tilinko, or the Bagpipe, used by Shepherds in Middle Europe for centuries.
Founded in 2001, the band performed on various occasions in Middle Europe and recorded two Longplayers, Lapis in Signo Serpentis (2004) and Am Kreuzweg (2006)
Explaining "Nacht Folk":
When you travel the Alps you will stumble across loads of legends, one of them is the "Nachtvolk" or in English the "Night - Folk": One day a poor shepherder lost his way after nightfall and stumbled helplessly in the dark. Suddenly he heard wonderful but strangely bewitched music. Bewildered he followed the tunes, carried by the wind, and soon came to an old shack illuminated by a gloomy light. There he watched in horror goblins, dwarves, witches and creatures of myth and legend dancing and feasting - he stumbled across the Night - Folk! Before he was able to flee, the Night Folk discoverded him peering through the window. With yelling and cheering, they grabbed the poor shepherder, and led him in the midst of their dance. So the nightmarish feast went on, til the first sun beams reached the shack. Suddenly the Night Folk disappeard and the Shepherder was left alone, not really realizing what has happended to him. When he made his way back into his village, he tried to calm himself by playing his fiddle. As he stroke the bow, the most wonderful music ever heard in the valley filled the air. This was the gift the Night Folk gave to him, the poor shepherder became the finest musician in his valley. For the rest of his life he searched for the Night Folk, but never found them again.
Lapis Serpentis call their music Nacht Folk inspired by this legend and maybe they have lost their way too some day, during a long hike in the mountains...
