Shea Keck, born in Jeffersonville, Indiana of mixed blood Cherokee/ Scotch-Irish
heritage, grew up in Knoxville, Tn singing and performing in her church choir. Shea started singing at age twelve performing throughout the southern United States with gospel group Heaven’s Harmony. Shea’s soaring vocals and electric stage presence mirrors her background in both gospel and blues.
During a performance at the Denver Indian Market with Native American Music Award winner Arvil Bird, Shea caught the ear of Micki Free ( a Cherokee/ Comanche mixed blood musician, NAMA award winner, formerly a member of Grammy award winning R&B group Shalimar) who approached her to join him performing at the Arlington, TX Indian Market. The duo will be collaborating an a cd next year called Electric Blues.
Recently Shea has performed at The Gathering of Nations on Native American Activist and Rapper Litefoot’s stage and with NAMA artist of the year Keith Secola at the Native American Music Awards show in Hollywood, FL which gave audiences a glimpse of her amazing talents as a vocalist and showman. She was also invited to perform with Mr. Secola at The Grassroots Festival in Ithaca, NY to promote arts education and A.I.D.S awareness. While there Shea was honored to attend a press conference where she was able to speak on the subject of poverty levels on reservations nationwide. Shea has also collaborated with NAMA winner and activist Shadowyze and Tha Cherokee Kid who was a member of Litefoot’s Reach Tha Rez tour.
Educated in Sports Medicine Shea combines her interest in health and fitness with the need to bring awareness to Native health issues such as Diabetes. By volunteering for The Diabetes Clinic in Snowbird, NC on the Cherokee Indian Reservation she shares her knowledge of the disease and it’s negative effect on Native people worldwide. Having learned her own language and traditions,
along with her love for volunteer work in her free time, she is now pursuing working more closely with Native youth to help preserve traditional Cherokee dance and language.
An educator and performer of Native music and dance, Shea is a Fancy Shawl, Northern Cloth and Jingle dress dancer. She has been honored to be Head Lady at the Bottomview Pow-wow in Tennessee to raise funds for The Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, two time dance judge for The Stone Mountain Pow-Wow in Georgia and has worked very closely with Native American Non-profit educational organization Indian Creek Productions in which she has educated thousands of people on the history of the Cherokee’s and women’s roles in Cherokee history. Shea was privileged to be asked to lecture and perform at The Dolly wood Native Festival and at the International Festival for The Children’s Museum in Oak Ridge, TN where she and other Cherokee dancers represented America and it’s true history. Recently adding activist to her list of accomplishments founding A Mission for 500 Nations, ( www.amf500nations.org ) A non-profit, Native operated organization dedicated to the well being and equal treatment of Native elders and youth she hopes to bring further awareness to Native social issues such as poverty.
Currently attending Lee University, Shea is now pursuing a degree in counseling. She hopes to help make a difference for the positive mind set of Native youth today.
