About Me

r. Bertus Portmores’ Singer Supreme Marlon Ainsworth aka Mr. Bertus, Jamaican Reggae & Dancehall artist, has long been recognized as a talented native son. Bertus blessed with music in his veins is preparing to take the music world by storm. “I was singing from my mother’s belly, it’s natural to me; in my DNA. I didn’t just decide to become an artist, I was born to do it”. His inspiration comes from the normal daily trials and tribulations of living in Jamaica. A life that is colorful and rich, with his personal experiences; and the experiences of those around him. Singing from the age of 7, Marlon grew up in the Waltham Park area of Kingston; attending St. Judes Primary and playing football. After being asked to enter a small contest one-day and actually winning it, Marlon attended a party. A popular Jamaican soundsystem called Lee’s Unlimited; fronted by Veteran DJ Josey Wales was the MC for this event. Bertus asked for a chance and DJ Josey Wales put young Bertus on the microphone, The first time Bertus touched a microphone, he received the blessing of a seasoned DJ and Soundsystem. His performance was as professional as the rest of the show; and with this fabulous start he's been deejaying, singing and writing songs ever since. After relocating to the Portmore area with his grandmother; He attended Independent City All Ages School; and also Bridgeport Secondary school. Marlon loved playing football and attending the Evangelistic Church. He began his training to become a barber at this time. But for Bertus, Music was always his first love. Mark Rankin - Bertus’ brother was working as a DJ for a Soundsystem known as Black African. This became the motivation Bertus needed to become involved in music full time. “As a teenager, I used to DJ comedy, funny or frivolous type lyrics. As I have grown over the years in the music business, my focus has changed and while I still love the comedy and dancehall favorites, I create music and lyrics more focused on the seriousness of life and what goes on in my community. These things directly influence my music and songwriting now” Mr. Bertus' work spans the full gamut of Reggae & Dancehall. Bertus first recorded with reggae legend, Clancy Eccles on the Surego Label. Known as a talented musical perfectionist behind the mic; Mr. Bertus has written well known songs for many popular Jamaican Artists, Producers and Studios.
