Myspace Layout Stealer Pimp MyspaceGREEN LIZARD is a well established band from The Netherlands. After founding the band in the summer of 1994, teen brothers Brian, Willy and Remi Tjon Ajong teamed up with drummer Roela in '95 and bass player Jay in '96. They almost immediately secured themselves of a large and loyal fan base in their hometown Tilburg. Thanks to their enigmatic live shows and extensive touring Green Lizard built up a solid live reputation throughout the Netherlands, confirmed two years later when they won Holland's biggest and most prestigious rock contest called De Grote Prijs Van Nederland. Instead of going for instant succes by chasing a record deal with a major, Green Lizard decided to bide their time.
After a series of shows in France, Green Lizard, independent and determined as ever, decided to send their live demos to American producer Jack Endino, renowned for his work with bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden.
Endino liked the Green Lizard material so much, he immediately agreed to produce their first independent release, 'THE NINE EP'. This EP, recorded in no more than nine days, stands out because of the solid, heavy and mature punk-grunge sound. The artwork contains original cartoon-like drawings designed by the bands multi-talented singer Remi.
Being a student in computer-imaging and animation at the School of Arts in Utrecht (Holland), it is no surprise that Remi also designed and directed the fantastic animated video for 'Turn Around', the first single from their first full album 'IDENTITY'. The result was hailed in Holland as the most exciting video since Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android'. This video won the Golden Cow Award (Holland Animation Festival) in the year 2000.
After the release of this single the band played at the two biggest Dutch festivals, Pinkpop and Lowlands. They toured Europe together with The Gathering and sold out several Dutch venues on a combined TMF @lter 8 Live Tour that also featured Krezip and Brainpower.
The band finally received national appreciation in 2001, when they were awarded the Silver Harp for 'IDENTITY'. Later that year they joined forces with former Urban Dance Squad drummer Michel Schoots to record a new version of 'Down', a song that was originally released on 'IDENTITY'. Featuring raps by Brainpower and scratches by TLM, the result 'Down 2k1' was immediately hailed by alternative radiostations and stayed on their .1 spot for weeks on end. A very well received on the Roskilde Festival in Danmark sealed a very successful year for the band.
'NEWBORN', the second full-length Green Lizard album was released in the summer of 2002 in front of a massive audience on Lowlands' main stage. Like 'IDENTITY', this record was produced by Clif Norrell, known for his work with bands like Faith No More, REM, Skunk Anansie and Jeff Buckley. The album is widely considered as the band's best work yet and features some impressive guest vocals by Henry Rollins. After the release of 2 singles, 'Wrong' and 'Mouthful', the band went on a small promotional tour of the USA in the summer of 2003. During the course of this tour, Green Lizard was invited by Kevin Lyman to play on his Vans Warped Tour. The 'Mouthful' single also featured a full length live CD, spread out over 4 collectable singles, which was recorded in Holland during the Dutch leg of the Newborn-tour.
After a short tour of Aruba, the band co-headlined the Converse Tour (together with The Apers and Janez Detd) in Belgium and The Netherlands during the winter of 2003/2004. After that, Green Lizard took a break from the touring circuit to focus on writing new material for their 3rd full-length album. In March of 2004, the band teamed up with The League of XO Gentlemen (with former Urban Dance Squad frontman Rude Boy) and The Riplets (an all girl Rotterdam Punk Rockband) to play on the Jack Daniel's Rock Nights Tour. Every night on this tour was concluded with a so-called 'Connections Set', where the 3 bands would get together and play their combined favorites of early '90s rock.
After their contract ended with Sony Music in the summer of 2004, the band started pre-production for their 3rd full length album. Without the pressure of a record company, Green Lizard decided to take things at their own pace, with several members also taking the time to explore collaborations with other bands, such as Reggae-Punk band Jaya The Cat from Boston, MA. The band also took the time to pay a visit to their Colombian fans by playing the Tortazo Festival in the country's capital Bogota.
During the fall of 2004, Green Lizard decided to focus on fine-tuning the new material and also trying out some of these songs by opening up for such bands as The Rasmus and Living Colour.
January 2005 marked the departure of guitar player and founding member Willy Tjon Ajong. With a very energetic and emotional gig at the Paradiso in Amsterdam (watch it here), Green Lizard closed a chapter and opened a new one. From March till May the band did a small club tour in Holland and Belgium entitled Preparing For Battle. Fans loved their news stuff and with great spirit the band entered the studio over the summer to record 12 brand new tracks. The new tracks were mixed by Clif Norrell in the fall of 2005 and were mastered by John Golden. The new record company is called I Scream Records who provide the band the international distribution which they need so badly.
The first release of the new record was the single One Minute/All You Have, which came out in November in Holland and Belgium. The 2 tracks got a lot of air play on national radio and put Green Lizard back on the map as one of the biggest rock acts of Holland. In Germany the single was used for a club DJ pool and got big reactions.
The new record 'LAS ARMAS DEL SILENCIO' came out on the 9th of February in the Netherlands and released in Europa May 5th. LAS ARMAS' has 12 great rock songs (including the single Walk Over Water), the best the band ever did. The band shot the video for Walk over Water in skatepark Burnside, Deventer and has great skate footage. After the release the band will tour like their is no tomorrow...
