Hi, my name is Willie Lee McCovey. Although, my friends and fans call me 'Mac' or Stretch.' I played 22 seasons in the major leagues, playing for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, and the Oakland Athletics. However, I am best know for the years that I spent playing in San Francisco. I played mostly first base, but also had stints playing outfield and as a designated hitter while in Oakland. In San Francisco, I played with some of the best ever to play the game - Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays, and Juan Marichal. I was a six time All-Star, and was voted the National League Rookie of the Year when I made my debut in 1959. Over my career, I was a .270 batter, hitting 521 homeruns, and driving in 1551 runs. However, my best season was in 1969 when I batted .320, hitting 45 homeruns and knocking in 126 runs - a year that also gained me the Most Valuable Player Award. I closed out my career where I started it - in San Francisco in 1980. I was voted into the Hall of Fame six years later. Over my 22 years in the league, I played in 2258 games, but only made the postseason twice - ending Game 7 of the 1962 World Series with a line drive into the mit of Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson. A hit that, if not caught by Richardson, would have driven in two runs and handed the Giants the Championship. I was honored by the San Francsico Giants shortly after the construction of Pac Ball Park by naming the cove past the right field wall 'McCovey Cove.'
