I did well at Jesuit High in New Orleans, and went on to play at Mississippi State with future Major Leaguers Rafael Palmiero, Bobby Thigpen, and Jeff Brantley.I played in the 1984 Olympics, leading the team in batting average, and was the '84 Golden Spikes winner, as the best amateur player in the nation. The San Francisco Giants drafted me in 1985, and by opening day of '86, I was the starting first baseman for the big club. In my very first at-bat, I homered off of Nolan Ryan in the Astrodome. I hyperextended my elbow during that season, and the games that I missed are still one of the biggest disappointments of my career.
We won the NL West that next season, but lost to the Cardinals in the NLCS. '88 was a solid season, but even though we finished above .500, we still ended up in 4th place. In '89, we won the Division and beat the Cubs in the NLCS to win the pennant. It may have been my best year, statistically, and I set several playoff records on my way to winning the NLCS MVP. The loss to Oakland in the World Series was certainly a let down, but it was a great opportunity to play in the Series; the only time I would get to a Series in my career.
I played with the Giants through 1993, then went to Texas, Baltimore, and finished in St. Louis in 2000.
I'm proud of my career accomplishments and statistics, and wouldn't have traded places with anyone. In 15 seasons, I batted .303, with 284 home runs and 1205 RBI. My career OPS was .880.
These days, I'm all about my family. I keep in contact with some old baseball buddies, and participate in Fantasy Camps from time to time, but my wife, children, brother, and parents get most of my time and energy.
And I didn't think I'd have to say this, but, umm ... this isn't really Will Clark. Just a fan. So he can be my "friend." And yours.
