About Me

BackList provides editorial, consulting, programming, and community outreach support for the literary arts. We are dedicated to keeping books in style.
Founded in 2004 by author and literary advocate, Felicia Pride, BackList began as a small newsletter distributed to one hundred people. It has since transformed into an innovative website with thousands of visitors; a timely literary news blog; and media, consulting, event planning and community outreach services for authors, publishers, and readers. We continue to support good writers and good books and work very hard to spread our love for the written word.Visit the BackList website for more details.Reading is more than fundamental; reading is power. We can't stop, won't stop keeping books in style.

Who would have thought that you could get deep life lessons from hip-hop?
  • Learn to deal with regrets by jamming to Jay-Z? Foster self-esteem listening to Mos Def? Exert your self-worth bases on cues from a Queen Latifah song? Get career advice from an Ice-T rhyme? Reflect on spirituality through a Kanye West tune?

  • THE MESSAGE is a DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF for the hip-hop generation—a compendium of real wisdom that has been distilled from the all-time greatest hip-hop songs. Pride examines a wide range of hip-hop songs and artists, interpreting life through their lenses. With each life lesson aptly titled after a hip-hop song, such as Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks,” EPMD’s “Please Listen to My Demo,” or Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power,” THE MESSAGE explores spirituality, success, love, business, and more through hip-hop.
"It is high time that someone wrote a book of meditations for the hip hop generation, and that is exactly what Felicia Pride has done with THE MESSAGE. This is Chicken Soup for the hip hop soul, Acts of Faith for b-boys and b-girls, Daily Cornbread with recipes written in rhyme. Everyone who loves hip hop should keep a copy of THE MESSAGE on the night table and consult it each morning."—Black Artemis, author of the hip-hop novels Explicit Content, Picture Me Rollin' and Burn

    Books:

According to the December issues of VIBE and Sister 2 Sister magazines, THE MESSAGE makes a dope holiday gift:

*VIBE chose THE MESSAGE as one of its VPicks and holiday reading gift selection.

*Sister 2 Sister included THE MESSAGE in its “15 Things You Need on Your Christmas List” feature. The magazine encourages you to cop THE MESSAGE for all your friends "Because it’ll remind you of why you fell in love with hip-hop." Their words not mine, although I completely agree!

Head to your local bookstore or sit at home and hit up an online bookseller, cop several copies of THE MESSAGE and complete all of your holiday shopping in less than five minutes. Priceless.
