Here's what we need: teams and individuals to sign up, gather money, and walk; volunteers help us prepare for and conduct the event; donations from every arena--public, corporate, and private; resources like food and water, advertising materials, and publicity. If you've got it, we need it! To become a walking team, simply go to www.birminghamaidsoutreach.org or call Karen Musgrove at 205.322.4197.
Decide on whether you want to be an individual walker or form a team. Teams can consist of anyone--family, friends, coworkers, church members. The team captain will collect everyone's money before the AIDS Walk and register the team. Individuals working together can raise thousands of dollars. Teams are eligible for team spirit awards based in the amount of money they raise.Anyone raising $50 or more will receive a Magic City AIDS Walk T-shirt. Raise $100 or more and receive a T-shirt and an AIDS Walk ball cap.
To date, HIV and AIDS has infected 14,897 people in Alabama. Of the number, more than 4,300 are in Jefferson County, and these are only the reported cases. THERE IS NO CURE FOR THIS DISEASE. HIV/AIDS does not discriminate, and it will continue to affect our community.
"Remember that someday the AIDS crisis will be over. And when that day has come and gone, there will be people who will be alive who will hear that once there was a terrible disease, and that a brave group of people stood up and fought and in some cases died so that others might live and be free." --Vito Russo, 1988
