About Me

Phoenix New Times nominee for Best Punk Band 2006, 3/26/05, by critic Serene Dominic: "If your notion of punk pogos over leather and heroin chic to get a better glimpse at Blondie and Berlin, then Blue Fur should be at the top of your list to check out at the Showcase. With singer Nicole pounding Farfisa keys, Blue Fur captures the sound of the post-punk, New Wave Zeitgeist at an ideal moment when modern rock radio was still fun, fun wasn't a bad thing, and no one had any idea The Police would lead to, uh, Sting. Blue Fur dubbed 2005 its Year of Gigging Dangerously, and plowed through an average of three shows a week, sometimes even two shows a night. Explains Nicole, Blue Fur is all about not being afraid to humiliate oneself for a questionable cause. Blue Fur has played plenty of sweltering 3 p.m. shows during hot Phoenix summers. Chances are, youve run across these talented musicians at the Fiesta Bowl Block Party, the Tempe Music Festival, or the Rock n Roll Marathon over the past two years. Next time they speed by you, hand them a cool drink. Theyre going places and need to replenish!"..............................Get Out, 2/17/05, Albert Ching: "Blue Fur's second effort is a brave deconstructionist act . . . the result is a more 'organic' feel . . . suiting their stylish brand of garage rock. Lead singer Nicole's vocals are the star of the album, at times Chrissy Hynde throaty ("Cafe") and alternately Shirley Manson breathy ("She Doesn't Have You"). . .[The album] raises the stakes . . . but still retains an inescapable sense of fun."....................The Arizona Republic, 12/18/04, John D'Anna: "Lots of news about our friends in the band Blue Fur as they get ready to release their new CD later this month . . .they're finalists in the Arizonamusicradio.com battle of the bands [and] . . .chosen to be one of the bands in the P.F. Chang's Rock n' Roll Marathon in January [2005] . . .lead singer Nicole may even channel Exene Cervenka of X fame.".....................The Rep, 12/16/04, Nicole Girard: "Their sophomore release [Cage Free] is a punkier, more eclectic follow-up . . . [with] powerful, Karen-O-like vocals"..................The Arizona Republic, 1/29/05, John D'Anna: "Blue Fur-thur -- Forgive us for the oblique Ken Kesey reference but we're just in that kind of mood. Could be because we've been listening to the new Blue Fur CD Cage Free, which really rocks. You'll probably notice their fans are all wearing T-shirts with the band's cool new logo, which was designed by the lovely and talented Polly Swann........................The Phoenix New Times, 5/5/05, Serene Dominic: [K]ind of a quirky Lene Lovich/Suzanne Fellini sound . . . Singer Nicole has an enjoyable presence . . .she nicely pulls off the low-voiced bitchy stuff, like "She Doesn't Have You," and the band sounds like it doesn't take itself so seriously that a good time and a cold beer are ever too far away"......................Rocktip.de, 7/1/05 (Germany): "Toller Indierock und eine fantastische Sngerin. Klasse Songs, zum Teil sehr punkig - ein klarer rocktip. Highlights: Cafe, Cinderella (mit starken Keyboards), Two years, Time (Ballade) und I need U. Kaufen!".............................Flagstaff Live!, 8/1/05, Dean Bonzani: In a post-apocalyptic world (coming soon enough, you betcha!), the fabulous foursome that is Blue Fur would have their own subterranean bunker complex, complete with homemade water distillation system and solar-powered groovy recording studio. While mutants fought over rotting dog haunches in the 200-degree heat of a Phoenix wasteland, our heroes would be chillin in lava-lamp-lit comfort, listening to the playback of their latest guitar and organ-fueled, punky power pop creations on monitor speakers built from salvaged Red Bull coolers. [Lead singer] Nicole's April March-esque chirping/growling/purring drowning out the inhuman shrieking in the distance. But who are these mysterious, modding flatlanders? With a name thats a nod to the Muppets Cookie Monster and Grover (All the cool Muppets are blue, Nicole says) and a sound both unique and 80s rock retro-tinged, Blue Fur have shared stages with Bryan Adams, Blues Traveler and the Gin Blossoms, among others, and have two albums under their belts, with a third on the way".........................We really have no idea why we're considered punk, or pop, or rock, or really anything but some general noise, but maybe you can figure it out and let us know. We're definitely the only band we know of that uses a custom-made three-legged keyboard stand. Whatever. Enjoy the tunes.
