Backstage, muffled laughter is slowly becoming louder. As you get closer, the source is revealed: five, young men laughing hystericaly. It’s hard not to join the fun… Prototype-A is gearing up for one of their three hundred shows they've performed since their early beginnings…
Prototype-A is a rock band from Montreal founded in 1997 under the name of Screwl Stew. The band, which was then more of a punk band, included five high school friends: Danick Ferland, singer, Pierre-André (P-A) Bédard, guitar, Benoît (Ben) De Champlain, guitar, Daniel (Dan) Quintal, bass, and Alain Scherer, drums. They recorded their first full-length album, Growing up, in 1999 and, with that in hand, did close to three hundred shows around the province of Quebec. They played with well known punk bands such as Teen Idols, ChixDiggit and Randy. One of their singles, Influence, made it to the top 3 in the skate-punk category of MP3.com. Even though their album got considerable recognition from the punk underground scene and their songs were released on various compilations around the world, their modest debut, too small for the size of their ambitions, had them pushing and developing their musical style even further.
In 2001, Prototype-A became the new band name with all five original members. The choice of the band’s new name emerged naturally from their new sound: more rock with less punk and the sharp sound of a synthetiser. The band also teamed up with Gautier Marinof, an up-and-coming sound engineer who has worked with many established Quebec artists and with Bob Rock on the lastest Simple Plan album “Still Not Getting Anyâ€. Together, they recorded in 2005 a seven-song EP that attracted interest from promoters all over North America. They’ve since then opened for Hoobastank, Papa Roach, Evanescence, Three Days Grace, Seether and Breaking Benjamin. They played at the Vans Warped Tour and headlined twice for the Canadian Motorcross Championship Tour.
Now, 2007 is already proving to be a major year for Prototype-A. They won the Montreal finals of the Rock Open, Quebec's biggest rock bands contest. After the big finale, which aired live on primetime at Musique Plus (Quebec’s MTV) a media storm was created - all eyes are on them: “This Morning Live†on Global TV did a live interview at their studio recordings at the beginning of April. On June 8th they played at the NXNE Festival in Toronto where they attracted a lot of attention. To top it off, Prototype-A just came out of the Studio where they recorded a new three songs demo.Prototype-A’s band members have been able to self-produce their EPs and demos by saving every penny they make. After 10 years of hard labour they are now ready to take it to another level by getting signed to a major record company.
