Since 1995, Ryoji Ikeda has been intensely active in sound art through concerts, installations, and recordings, presenting sublime imagery and manipulating acoustics to explore how sound can inform our experience of architectural space.He has been hailed by critics as one of the most radical and innovative contemporary composers for his live performances, exhibitions and album releases.The versatile range of Ikeda's research is demonstrated by his collaborations with contemporary musicians, composers, designers, architects and choreographers. sCollaborations include working with Carsten Nicolai on the project cyclo., which seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music through real-time analysis of sound signalthe composition, in 2004, of the music for Wear, a performance by Frankfurt Ballett choreographed by William Forsythe. In 2001, Ikeda worked with architect Toyo Ito on the sound design for an architectural installation that was presented in Europe, New Zealand and Japan. He exhibits a collaborative project at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, with contemporary artist
Hiroshi Sugimoto (until January 2006). Ikeda was a member of the Japanese multi-disciplinary performance group dumb type, for whom he composed sound between 1995 and 2003.Ikeda has exhibited and performed at many of the world's leading festivals and venues, including Centre Pompidou 2004 and 2001, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville 1999, and La Villette 2002 (all Paris); Sónar 1999 (Barcelona); Architectural Association 2002, Hayward Gallery 2000, Millennium Dome 2000, and Queen Elizabeth Hall 2000 (all London); Auditorium Parco della Musica 2003 (Rome); ICC 1999 and 2005 (Tokyo); Göteborg Biennial 2003 (Göteborg).In 2001, Ikeda was awarded the Ars Electronica Golden Nica prize in the digital music category and he was short listed for a
World Technology Award in 2003.
