Who Killed Amanda Palmer?

About Me

It is important in becoming artists to make sure that we do not pollute this world; moreover, as artists we can actually beautify this world. Inspired in this way with our contact with dharma art, there is less room for neurosis. That is the actual project of dharma art, which is both necessary and important. Inch by inch, step by step, our efforts should wake people up through the world of art, rather than please everyone and go along with the current. The dharma artist is not a self-styled artist painting a picture out of his own shit and piss and selling it for a million dollars, but an upright person, a good, gentle, and well-meaning person who is wiling to cut through his or her subconscious gossip completely so that a straightforward, brilliant, precise, clear mind takes place....What makes you artistic? What convinces you, if you are uncertain, that a work of art is a real expression of yourself? Or is a work of art something to make sure that the rest of the world is convinced about you, so that in turn you yourself find ground to exist? --- Chogyam Trungpa

FILMS

La Vie en Rose, 2007, directed by Olivier Dahan

Alice, 1988, directed by Jan Svankmajer

brian just turned me onto this one on tour. holy shit.

biopic of the life of edith piaf and it doesn't get more tragic. the film captures every side: it's a brutal portrayal, unrelenting.

she was hit again and again and again with one bitch turn-of-events after another and she went down mean and early.

you might cry. we did..

this was one of my favorites in high school and i still love it.

totally surreal and uncomfortable take on "alice in wonderland" by genius czech animator jan svankmeyer. mostly stop-animation with one young actress playing alice. this is some dark shit, be prepared to be disturbed.

his other films are also incredible - check him out if you don't know him.

BOOKS

The Mother Tongue
by Bill Bryson

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
by Dave Eggers

english and how it got that way.

i love bill. i love bill a lot. ever since i read "a short history of nearly everything" i have been obsessed.

this one is a beautifully written (and hilarious, as usual) history of the windy path of the english language.

rad rad rad. bill rocks.

ok. a few years ago all of my friends read this book and it was a strict love/hate divide. i loved.

this is a memoir of 20-something dave eggers stuffed with the angst of our generation without being too angsty.

it is purposely self-referential in a way that stays vulnerable. real honest and true and worth the longness.

ALBUMS

Safe Inside The Day
Baby Dee

some of you may recognize dee from our Roundhouse DVD, where she guested with us. i was first introduced to her wonderful music by sxip shirey and i was an instant fan. to describe her music is to ruin it: it is heart-wrenching and hilarious and hymnal and maddening. somewhere near planet antony. you MUST see her LIVE. GO! she's on tour for the next few months: dates are up at her website babydee.org .
