QUEEN OF THE MAY

A young man wakes and smells the coffee, but finds it smells of tea...

SWEET LIESL

The hills ARE alive!

HEAVEN HELP ME NOW I'M ON MY OWN

'A king I was then...and a fool am I now.'

BOTOX BABY

For that 'just-looked-in-the-mirror' feeling

YELLOWLEAF

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

A POLO SHIRT IN YONKERS

Pity the fool who'd chase the moon on a promise...

CARY GRANT IS DYING

'If Hitchcock is the Ferryman, best leave a fiver on my tongue'

NECESSARY

So much more than a simple need...

CURTAIN CALL

Because sometimes all you can do is take a bow and exit stage left

HELLO, DISCO

For Dad Dancers the World over.

LIVE FROM THE CLIFF FACE

There but for the grace of God...'

IT'S NOT ABOUT LOVE

Don't get hot and flustered...settle down with a good book and a nice cup of tea

SOMETIMES MY ARMS BEND BACK

To all those who suffer in silence

IF I BUMP INTO JESUS

Who do YOU want to be?

I'm a singer/songwriter based in Wales. I scribble a bit too. As likely to write a piano bagatelle as an electro groove, my songs fall somewhere in between these two poles.

I have a weakness for time signatures you can't dance to. I'm seeking help with this issue.

was it for this...?

is my generically schizoid contribution to the oversubscribed world of studio recorded song. Its fourteen tracks range from the funny to the heartbreaking. Do not expect to stay in one place for very long. No one track typifies the whole. Do not expect an easy ride. Crying and laughter turn into each other so easily, don't you think?

The cd is available by clicking on the above sleeve image of me looking wind-swept and bereft outside a Cardiff B&B.

If I can make you smile or break your heart I've done my job.

With love always,

jrc

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: jerrobin.com
Band Members: Me, myself and I
Influences: First band I was ever really into was Adam and the Ants. What made me take up my guitar and rock was when I happened upon one of my sister's Genesis albums. So started a perilous journey along the dark corridors of what has come to be termed 'progressive rock'.

Now I'm as happy listening to Debussy, Killing Joke or Sondheim. I am not self-consciously trying to sound like anyone other than myself, however. Whether this is a good thing or not we'll leave up to the accountants and marketing departments to decide.

GENESIS

The 70's albums from Trespass (featuring the reclusive brilliance of Anthony Phillips on guitar) up to the underrated And Then There Were Three. Call it overblown, pompous, upper middle class twaddle if you wish but I love it and wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now if it wasn't for them

KATE BUSH

The Dreaming. Houdini, The Shining, failed bank robberies and answering machines. Experimental, lush, harsh, fragile, mesmerising.

COCTEAU TWINS

Blue Bell Knoll and Heaven or Las Vegas. The first was my survival soundtrack for being 17 and thoroughly miserable.

KILLING JOKE

Probably Brighter Than A Thousand Suns. Dark and beautiful and insane and, well, listen to it.

JOAN as POLICE WOMAN

If you know, you know. If you don't, you should.

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

Scheherazade. Might and beauty and, for me, the mountains of North Wales.

THE WHO

Who's Next. A finer example of a band having a finest hour would be very hard to find.

STING

The Soul Cages. His least commercial album but, in my view, his richest.

TANGERINE DREAM

White Eagle or Underwater Sunlight. Still amazes me that such unashamed electronic music can be so evocative of natural spaces.

FAURE

Requiem. Sublime from start to finish. A little glimpse of heaven.

JEFF BUCKLEY

Grace. Didn't everyone have an 'oh my god' moment when they first heard this? Didn't everyone feel that the world was a worse place when he died?

KING CRIMSON

Red. In particular Starless. If you're gonna break up your band you might as well go out on a high. To come back with Discipline almost a decade later with another totally new sound shows the genius of Robert Fripp.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT

Want. I'm probably the last person on earth to have caught up to this guy's brilliance. How I wish I'd written Go or Go Ahead.

GOLDFRAPP

Felt Mountain, Black Cherry. Cinematic, relentlessly grooved and exquisitely naughty.

Sounds Like:

Actually I don't know but -

For Quirkiness - The Divine Comedy and Robyn Hitchcock. Although I guess I'm no surrealist.

One Person ONCE said - I sounded a BIT like Rufus Wainwright. If you squint and really want that to be true you might see it. I don't agree but guess I'd be daft not to put it down. He's rather a special one.

Someone quite credibly hip told me in 1995 my voice reminded him of Julian Cope. That's cool. How I wish I'd written 'Reward' or 'World Shut Your Mouth'

I would REALLY like to sound like - a male version of Joan Wasser. She is a genius. If you haven't heard her yet you ought to be ashamed of yourself. Her band is Joan as Police Woman. Look her up NOW.

Pretty sure I do NOT sound like - The Pussycat Dolls, Kylie, Elvis, The KLF, The Beach Boys, James Blunt, Curtis Mayfield, Ricky Martin, Petula Clark, Nathan Lane, Stump, Pet Shop Boys or The White Stripes. This list is sure to grow.

GOOD IDEA - If you think I do or don't sound like someone let me know and I'll add it!

'Syd Barrett meets Warm Leatherette' - thanks Gary

'...echoes of Marc Almond' - ta very much Koen

She knows, you know

My friend had his camcorder nicked at Lagos airport.  His mum doesn't know this yet, so don't tell her.  She had told him not to bring it, and he told her that he hadn't.  When he arriv...

Ever the technologist

Always a fussy eater, I took some cans of the sadly-discontinued and much-missed spaghetti spirals.  My palate was not ready for such delicacies as dodo and ebah.  But it was fascinating to ...

This sporting life

One job I do not want.  A javelin marker.  How do these guys know they're not going to be impaled into the sward?  Are they thrill-seekers?  Are they just very, very quick?  W...

The young perp in Africa

I was only in Nigeria for a week but managed to get arrested twice.  I've dined out on this and probably adorned the story through the years.  But, since I was ten at the time, there should ...

Voices

On Sundays we can hear the chapel-goers singing hymns through the wall.  You can tell they're singing in Welsh because, although the tunes are familiar, the syllables sometimes run on a bit longe...

My garden, my canine friend...

We had merely been on growling terms, next door's dog and me, until today.  Today he cast aside all doubts and, looking somewhat agonized, rubbed up against my leg and nuzzled my hand.  He h...

The whole hog

Tonight I shall make carbonara using bacon bought from Billy down the road.  This bacon is so robust that if I laid it out in the sun I could make a passable kayak and sail off down the Ystwyth.&...
