I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Stubborn, opinionated, creative, feminist, socially and politically conscious."I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." - Douglas Adams (1952-2001)

My Interests

I love books and music. I'm into taekwondo and playing outside, and I don't mind getting dirty. I've also started distance running, and I'm currently training for the Kananaskis K-100 Relay (a 100-mile relay race in the mountains). I love ballroom dancing with my sweetie too. I'm a member of the SCA (a medieval hobby group). I'm also into rhetoric (the real thing, like Cicero and Aristotle). I like live theatre, live music, opera, and art galleries. Basically, I'm a well-dressed city girl who loves cute shoes but isn't afraid to do crazy things. Oh, and did I mention my motorcycle?

I'd like to meet:

Interesting people.

Music:

Almost anything: indie, jazz, ska, punk, folk, classical, opera, blues, alt. country, angry chick music...as long as it's not cookie-cutter boring.

Movies:

Zombie flicks, documentaries, fantasy and sci-fi, art films, dark comedies, Audrey Hepburn movies

Television:

The news, mostly. Documetaries, The Simpsons, British comedies.

Books:

My library lines the walls of my room, and covers almost every imaginable genre. Who the hell can choose? Books are a passion for me, both in my work and in my life. It's great to have a job where what you produce is something you love.

Heroes:

My mum and dad. No, really! Christine de Pizan (the first real feminist writer, who lived in medieval France). Social and political activists.

My Blog

Hey Metric, I'm so sorry

Last Thursday, I had a vivid reminder of why I hate going to all-ages shows. One of my favorite bands, Metric, came to play Edmonton, and I went with two of my friends to see the show. I was excited f...

Car go smash

So I'm driving down 26th avenue in Calgary this weekend, about to drop my mother off at her friend's house before heading out on the highway to head home to Edmonton. It's a warm, sunny, and altogethe...

The big step forward

Oh dear god, my new job starts tomorrow, and I'm scared out of my mind.  I have my foot in the door in the book publishing world.  A big step up from being a waitress, right?  But that'...

Pretty Vacant: The Mainstream Punk Explosion

How do you shock someone when they just saw the same thing on a TV commercial? Thats how Eli Brook, once active in the Edmonton punk scene, describes the current state of the punk movement since p...

Tank full of cariboo

Apparently, SUVs trump cariboo. As I'm sure everyone has heard by now, the US Senate approved drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. The Arctic is an extremely fragile ecosyste...

Reflection on a loss

This weekend, I got some very sad news. A friend of mine at school lost her father after his long, long struggle with cancer. We've shared quite a bit over the last while, about the experience we've...

Hands off my passport

An independent task force has recommended that all of North America (Canada, the United States, and Mexico) have a common customs, defense, and passport system. This is in response to the Americans' ...

Missile Defense

The news just broke through Radio Canada that Paul Martin is expected to announce on Thursday that Canada will not support the US-led strategic ballistic missile defense program. On the surface, this...

A question of relevance

I've got this paper to write for my pop culture class, and one of the possible topic areas relates to subcultures and countercultures. It made me think about how my disgust when I saw Ashlee Simpso...

Valentine's Day (but I'm okay)

It's Valentine's Day, and I'm single. Usually, this would mean that I would be ranting about the sentimentality of this extraordinarily commercial holiday, but this year I'm taking a different attitu...
