Bla bla Skaarn Drum n bass
REFLEX
Reflex comprises of four individuals dedicated to taking broken beats to the masses in South Africa. Benson, RudeOne, Tasha B andSonar have kept the drum and bass scene in Johannesburg alive and well for the last four years by throwing Thursday night parties inMelville as well as playing top festivals all over the country. We are also the first drum and bass crew to get a slot on nationalradio with 5FM. Our infectious blend of trip hop, liquid funk, reggae, dub, jump up, breaks and dark style beats has rocked dancefloors time and time again by giving audiences something fresh and original. Our common trait is being truly passionate about what wedo and a belief that drum and bass can create a huge following in South Africa. Always providing quality music no matter where weplay, each member brings something really special to the crew.
BENSON
Benson is a living legend on the Jo’burg drum and bass scene. He discovered drum ‘n bass in 1994 whilst trying to find new music forhis aerobics classes and has never looked back. UK DJ Vicki Edwards got him into mixing and after getting a set of budget decks hesoon found himself playing out. He held down a residency at 206 with the Next Step Crew from ’97 – ’99 and also played various ravessuch as ICE and Fantasia. Over the years Benson has featured alongside many big names such as Ed Rush, Aphrodite and Raynor at 206 andmore recently Raiden at Carfax. Now one of the original Reflex crewmembers, he’s brought drum and bass back to life in Jozi with hissublime mix of soulful liquid beats. His infectious smile, flowing mixing and unmatched crowd interaction make him a firm favoriteamongst the SA drum and bass massive.
RUDEONE
Roan aka DJ RudeOne started listening to Jungle/DrumnBass around the age of 15. A friend's older brother brought him some tapes backfrom the UK and after one listen he was hooked. Every time he got near a system at a party he would make sure his beats were beingplayed, whether people like it or not. As his drum ‘n bass collection grew he became more interested in DJ'ing and started to "mix" athouse parties on 1 CD player, a broken turntable, a tape deck and a shitty mixer. He started taking his DJing seriously and got a slotat Reality in Johannesburg before going over to the UK.
In London he hooked up with Knowledge Magazine and played at their monthly event "BarKnowlege @ Cafe 1001" alongside world famous DJ'sKlute, Utah Jazz, and the resident DJ Haze. He has also played everywhere in South Africa from Cape Town to Johannesburg alongside biginternational names including Noisia, Counterstrike, Robyn Chaos to name but a few.
RudeOne’s style is characterized by energy soaked sets that keep crowds stuck to the dancefloor. Quick mixing, massive double drops andan innate ability to read the crowd make RudeOne one of SA’s finest.
TASHA B
Tasha Baxter is everything from DJ, singer, songwriter, producer, musician and all points in between. Her vocals keep crowds in awe,as do her funk filled DJ sets and unmistakable energy. Tasha started singing out in Cape Town at the age of 12 and has been recordingever since. Her track with Roger Goode, In the Beginning, was number one on 5fm and Pete Tong’s Radio 1 chart in the UK and her nextalbum is on the way. She got into drum and bass with Cape Town DJs such as Counterstrike and began DJing 2 years ago after moving toJozi and meeting Sonar. Her inherent musical gift saw her playing at parties shortly after and her sets epitomize fresh, energy filleddrum and bass. Tasha B’s style sees her playing everything from lounge beats to neurofunk, all depending on what the floor needs. Shehas sung alongside Pendulum, Dieselboy, Noisia, Teebee, Counterstrike and many house DJ’s continuing to rise as one of the world’s topmusicians. Watch this space!
SONAR
A founding member of Reflex, Sonar began his DJing career in ‘99 after following his love of music by investing in a pair of secondhand turntables. From then on he’s been dedicated to mastering his trade and bringing South Africa fresh, tightly rolled drum ‘n bass.He plays a variety of styles including liquid funk, dub, neurofunk and tech step, merging them all to create textured,attention-grabbing sets with something for everyone. Sonar has played alongside all the internationals such as Dieselboy, Pendulum,Raiden, Counterstrike and on the Knowledge Magazine SA Tour. His goals are to give drum ‘n bass the recognition and following itdeserves in South Africa and to take Reflex beyond our borders.
