Outpost for Contemporary Art is devoted to interaction and international exchange in contemporary art. It uses multiple presentation strategies -- both inside and outside the gallery context -- to support artists’ ambitions and broaden the role art plays in society.
Since its inception in 2004, Outpost has organized its programs in thematic and geographic two-year cycles. The first cycle, which focused on North America, addressed present day relations between Mexico, Canada, and the United States and brought artists from all three countries to Los Angeles for residencies, exhibitions, events, and conversations.
In 2007 and 2008, the program focus is on socio-political transformation in Eastern Europe. Programs are being designed to stimulate an ongoing, generative, educative, and collaborative dialog between Eastern European artists and curators and our local artistic communities.
Recently, Outpost established a home base in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park. During this next period of growth and development, the space is serving as an office and a studio for periodic residencies and programs. Our longterm goal is to have the facility evolve into a meeting ground for local and international artists and audiences with a year-round residency program, a resource, event, and gathering space, and an intermittent exhibition venue.
