There he met SCCA club champion Bob Sharp, whose car dealership was only six miles away from Said's motorcycle shop. By 1987 Said was competing in SCCA amateur races and in '88 was rookie of the year in his Corvette Challenge.
The next three years driving Corvettes produced SCCA Showroom Stock GT National championships. The 1992 IMSA Endurance Challenge Sports driver's championship gave Said four titles in as many years.
Said ranked eighth in the ADAC German Cup in 1993, and made his first Le Mans start, from the pole, in '94. He recorded another pole and his first victory, in the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, that season.
Said returned to the United States in 1995 and joined the SCCA Trans-Am Series, winning the Rising Star of the Year award.
Ten years after going to his first race as a spectator, Team PTG owner Tom Milner hired Said to drive in his BMW M3 IMSA program. Said won 15 races, including the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1997 and '98 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in '98.

NASCAR career


He drove a part-time schedule in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series driving the #36 Chevrolet for MB Sutton Motorsports. He competed in his first cup race in 1999, and his first oval race in 2004 (at Homestead). His first Daytona 500 start was in 2005. He is commonly referred to as a "Road Course Ringer" along with Ron Fellows and Scott Pruett among the media and other drivers for his ability on the road courses at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen International.
He drove full-time in the 1997 and 1998 seasons in the Craftsman Truck Series. He won the 1998 race at Infineon Raceway.
Said signed a contract with Evernham Motorsports to help the team's road course program in 2006. Said and his crew chief Frank Stoddard and Mark Simo announced the creation No Fear Racing in May 2006 and which will use equipment from Roush Racing. They plan on entering five cup races starting with the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Said also was announced as the driver of the #4 GEICO Dodge for Fred Biagi at Lowe's. He started 40th and finished 31st.
