About Me

I was picked up by a junky Chevy outside Pendleton, Oregon. The driver talked for almost two hours about how he was saved out of Satanism by Christian death metal and later joined a band and grew out his hair (he didn't say anything about showering but, unless he was a particularly dirty Satanist, he quit that also), but that was nothing to the truckdriver outside Las Vegas.

His old Metro picked me up in Las Vegas and we went 55 all the way to Albuquerque with him trying (hopelessly he felt) to convince me Jesus has all the answers Plato lost, Martha Stewart was the Antichrist, and that the blacks were ruining the country. He promised I would forget him in four years. One to go.

Fashion of books

Well, it appears my fears of not getting into grad school were, if not groundless, at least not necessary. I will be going to the City University of New York in the fall on a teaching fellowship. Th...

What to do?

Well, it appears I have been rejected from the graduate programs to which I applied. I would like to dismiss this with some ironic hand-waving, but the truth is I am fairly upset. I have always assu...

Oops, I guess Mr. Sweeney gets double air time

I thought that first post was lost to the internet gutters and so I rewrote it. My rewrite's a bit different, so I'll keep them both up there. Sorry.

Really exciting philo and job stuff

I've (unwisely) put my Kant reading on the back burner to focus on another book (shown below). It is a history of analytic philosophy in the twentieth century--the tradition in which I, and most othe...

Interpol(ations)

I think most people know this, but the mobster restaurant I was cooking at closed down a few weeks ago and so I have been back on the job-hunting warpath for a while. Since then I have litter...

Is Jeff Tweedy a Heideggerian?

Yesterday I finished One Palestine, Complete by Tom Segev. It is a history of Palestine during the British Mandate (1917-48) that takes a somewhat revisionist approach by arguing that during its rule...
