The bicycle has influenced the social, political and economic life of Toronto residents for more than 135 years. After first appearing in Toronto in 1859, it would revolutionize transportation in the city by promising unimagined freedom of travel. It would subsequently contribute to better roads, women's emancipation and the growth of consumerism, tourism, professional sport and the subsequent development of the motorcycle, automobile and airplane. And that was before the turn of the 20th century. Since then it the bicycle has remained a compelling and adaptable machine, continuing as a mainstay of transportation, business, professional athletics and recreation and a model for healthy and sustainable community living. Revolutionary, transforming and highly adaptable, but perhaps, the greatest legacy of the bicycle is its' ongoing ability to be a wonderful, beautiful joyous addiction for those under its spell.
