My Interests

"Bring democracy here first!"Dear Mr. President, Come take a walk with me. Let's pretend we're just two people.. and, You're not better than me. I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly....What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street, Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep. What do you feel when you look in the mirror, Are you proud....How do you sleep while the rest of us cry, How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye. How do you walk with your head held high, Can you even look me in the eye. And tell me why.............. Excerpted from, "Dear Mr. President" - Alecia (Pink) Moore

I'd like to meet:

Music:

Literally, all kinds of music. I'm loving Pink and Neil Young for their courage, right now. I thought that I hated Eminem, until I saw 8 Mile and then I understood him. I, especially, love the music of the 60's and 70's, mostly for the memories they evoke of friends and experiences that I'll carry in my heart, forever. The music of the Beatles, Stones, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor were the soundtrack of my earliest experiences. I know what was playing when I met every person that I, proudly, still call my friends 30-some years later. The music we listened to and introduced each other to, bonded us. Our journey into middle age has brought those songs to life. I really didn't know what "In My Life" and "Yesterday" were about until I had experienced the funerals of my parents and said goodbye to friends, either through death or a simple fading away of committment to the relationships. As the years go by, the songs that I listened to (and thought I understood) effect me in ways that I could never have imagined as I was playing them on juke boxes and transistor radios, when they were new to me. I listened to James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" until I nearly wore the needle of my record player through the black vinyl and the words had become indelibly etched in my consciousness; however, I felt that this was a very personal song specific to Taylor's experience. Since 9/11, "Sweet dreams and flying machines, in pieces on the ground", now means something that I truely understand.

Movies:

I love movies that teach me about life, for better or worse. Films can represent our commanality and help us to understand each other. Some favorites are: It's a Wonderful Life, In America, Avalon, Ironweed (not a pretty story but Nicholson and Streep....acting at it's best), In Cold Blood, Klute, Muriel's Wedding, Cool Hand Luke, the Marx Brothers, The Godfather I and II, John Sayles's films, ..... * Dr. Zchivago (yeah, sappy but I love it and the memory of seeing it with my sister, Sue),anything with Cher (I think she's more talented as an actress), The Sixth Sense, anything directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Eating Raoul, Harold and Maude, most Albert Brooks films, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Michelle Pfieffer or Lee Grant (this lady on either side of a camera)...... and good documentaries.*Re: Dr. Zchivago: When we were 15 or so, the old Avon near Brown University had a revival of David Lean films. Sue and I sat through all 7 (slight exaggeration) hours of this thing, we get to the last 2 minutes only to have an old lady sitting in front of us loudly explain to her friend that ("this is where he gets off the trolley to chase her and drops dead in the street...."), we wanted to kill her. And, sorry if I ruined the ending for you...!

Television:

Don't get into tv much these days; but when I remember what channel and what night, I watch the History Channel, AMC, Discovery Channels, American Scientific, PBS, the Animal Planet channel, Myth Busters and SciFi's local heroes the Ghost Hunters (rarely does anything of interest happen, but I love to watch them bicker about who forgot the cables). Past favorites have been: Six Feet Under, Cagney and Lacy, Roseanne, The Honeymooners, Night Gallery, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Pinky and the Brain and The 3 Stooges.

Books:

My reading tastes run to King and Patterson. Suspense and mysteries. My curiosity about people draws me to biographies and autobiographies. Books that effected me as a young person were; Dalton Trumbo's, "Johnny Got His Gun" and "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", by Dee Brown and Truman Capote's, "In Cold Blood".

Heroes:

Parents who get up and go somewhere every day trying to do the best they can. I don't care what you do or how little you make, you are a hero!Christopher and Dana Reeves, two extraordnary individuals. They were a true life lesson in how to conduct oneself with dignity, humor and courageousness in the face of unbelievable adversity.Paul Newman for creating Newman's Own as a means to support wonderful programs that benefit children in need. He has shown that his heart is as big and beautiful as his smile.John Walsh, another amazing person who has managed to make a devastating experience the catalyst for change in the way the FBI and our nations police forces treat missing children cases today. His dedication and work on America's Most Wanted makes him a hero, to me.
