KOOL SHADES (NEW PHOTOS!)

We're Kool Shades...not THE Kool Shades.

About Me

Kool Shades is a six-piece band with members divided equally from the University of Arizona, Loyola Marymount, Pima Community College, and Artworks Academy. Their style contributes a variety of musical genres including ska, reggae, progressive, dancehall, dub, electronica and more. They have been creating music since January of 2004 when guitarist/vocalist Moss Worthington and drummer Nick Tkachyk (former members of The Cause and Grilled Cheese Sandwhich) decided to form a band and paired up with bassist Sean McEvoy, saxaphone/trombone/vocalist Greg Stanley, and trumpet Clay Gibson. Not too long after, trumpet/keyboardist Aiden Fishbein was added to the band. They continue to make music today with a selection of demos, live recordings, and now a full length cd - Live! From the Sun , under their belt.
In February of 2007 they won first place in the John Lennon Songwriting contest (Arizona Daily Star Battle of the Bands) that took place at the Rialto. Part of the prize package included an opportunity to record and shoot a music video to their song, "Every Other Night," which then led them to win first place in the national songwriting contest. Kool Shades were then allowed to perform at the Vans Warped Tour in Phoenix the following summer.
When next school year came around, Sean McEvoy unfortunately left the band to attend school in California. He was replaced by Trenton "Trent" Castillo, a well known friend of some of the members. Trent still plays with the band, although Sean still plays an occasional show every now and then.
Kool Shades has played in bars, churches, roads, garages, living rooms, backyards, cafeterias, culdesacs, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, local tv and radio shows, and more. They have had the pleasure of playing with the likes of Streetlight Manifesto, Vampire Weekend, Catch 22, Rx Bandits, Dan Potthast of MU330, Ryanhood, Whole Wheat Bread, many outstanding local acts, and more.
