Listen - there’s a new sound in the air, and something is very different about it. It could be the powerful rhythm section moving smoothly in complex meters with music both epic and subtle. Perhaps it’s the rich horn arrangements weaving catchy, harmonious melodies that avoid cliché. The insightful lyrics and vocal prowess will surely ensnare your attention if the energetic, commanding stage presence hasn’t done it yet. The intricate songwriting and forward-thinking message support the band’s talent with substance and sincerity, and through years of self-management and a DIY ambition, Captain Squeegee is truly a group that has paid its dues.
. . .
After forming in 2002, the band quickly replaced most of the lineup, keeping the name though its origin is comically unknown. These formative years brought the current members together through instances of fate, and in May of 2006 Captain Squeegee released their debut EP, “Behind the Metal and Metric Pace.” They have since played hundreds of local shows, including higher-profile gigs with Incubus, 30 Seconds To Mars, Rise Against, The Fray, Everclear, Authority Zero, Pennywise, Social Distortion, Unwritten Law, and The Mad Caddies. The band has also given highlight performances at a handful of festivals such as Tempe Music Festival, Edgefest, and Warped Tour. The buzz around Phoenix became even louder with the frequent airplay and support of local radio station The Edge 103.9. Soon Captain Squeegee was booking tours of the southwestern United States, traveling and getting exposure to new markets. Already, high-quality performances and ardent online promotion have earned them enthusiastic fans in several states.
. . .
Captain Squeegee went back to the studio for several months and released their debut full-length album, “Nothing vs Everything,” in July of 2008. The group’s newfound maturity resonated through all 12 tracks of heightened musical integrity, performance, and originality. The reach of their appeal has grown considerably as a result, generating interest throughout the U.S. and even internationally. Progressia, a music magazine from France, recently awarded Captain Squeegee ‘Editor’s Pick – Best Album of 2008’ and ‘Best Hope of 2008’ after an extremely positive review of “Nothing vs Everything” and an interview by Jean-Philippe Haas. In January of 2009, the band worked with a budding production company and released their first music video, “By the Light,” displaying their inherent drive, creativity, and resourcefulness.
. . .
Although seven years of hard work has cultivated a unique sound and a loyal fanbase, the band recognizes that the task is barely underway. Never satisfied, Captain Squeegee is already concocting a new album to explore even more interesting musical territory and push their limits. Because of their urge to draw listeners away from the buffet of mediocrity that is mainstream music and the tremendous questions posed by their lyrics, this band will survive the ebb and flow of short-lived trends. Get used to that new sound, because this is only the beginning.
