Star 93.7 - The Rhythm Of Boston

About Me

Star 93.7 (WQSX) was an FM radio station in the Greater Boston area that ran from April 1, 1999 to April 14, 2005.
Its format of music was known to most as "dance music" - which included everything from newer dance music itself to disco to freestyle to electronica to funk to r&b and to house music. Mixed in with all that, top 40/pop songs were included as well.
Prior to the station becoming "Star 93.7", it was "Eagle 93.7" (WEGQ) which played mostly classic rock. Sunday nights however, featured Vinnie Peruzzi (Disco Vinnie) playing club classics (disco). Apparently because his show was such a success, it was rumored that it helped inspire the format change from Eagle to Star. Incidentally, Vinnie's "Sunday Night Club Classics" continued from Eagle to Star which lasted until he passed away in 2004.
Star was a great radio station because it was perfect for people that loved dance music. It played all the classics, yet broke new dance music. Star threw some pretty good concerts with big names as well. On the weekends, it featured mix shows with guest DJs from all over breaking the latest in electronica music.
Speaking of mix shows, you could always hear these on Star any given time of the day. In the mornings, with "Ralphie and Karen's Morning Show", in the afternoon with the "noontime workout", in the evening at 6 and long Holiday weekends all day Saturday and Sunday.
Star's original mix show on the weekend nights in 2000 - The Star Sound Factory - featured DJs such as DJ Domingo, DJ Steve Sossong & DJ Spinelli. In 2005, DJ Ricky, DJ Massi & DJ Danae Jacovidis along with other guest DJs could be heard breaking music during "levels 1, 2 & 3".
These days, new dance music is only heard late on the weekends on a few stations in the area (Kiss 108 and 88.9 WERS). As far as any "classics" are concerned, 97.7 WILD FM on the weekends features the "Time Tunnel" which plays a lot of classic soul/r&b/funk (they also play a lot of it during the day and late at night as well). The "Oldies 103.3 Saturday Night Party" with Barry Scott on Oldies 103.3 (WODS) plays a lot of disco/dance music every Saturday Night from 8 to Midnight. Other than that, Boston has no official "dance music" station and probably won't for some time seeing dance music just isn't as popular as it once was.
In New York City, they have 103.5 KTU (WKTU) which is similar to what Star was. Why is KTU so popular and so successful there? Well, it could be the fact that there's 9x as many people there as there is here in Boston, or it's because some of their DJs are Celebrities (Judy Torres, K-7 & Whoopi Goldberg to name a few), or it's because a lot of the Artists of the songs they play are actually from that area. Whatever the case, they have it and it's there.
It's no wonder more and more people that love dance music in the Boston area are switching over to satellite radio though. With so many stations playing all kinds of dance music, it's perfect. Even most cable systems now have a variety of disco/dance music stations to choose from. Some might say, who needs FM?
