In today’s country music scene, many fans don’t realize that their favorite entertainers are artists surrounded by a small number of highly qualified hired musicians. For example, you can tune into CMT one week and see the same fantastic guitar player behind Billy Currington as Sara Evans the following week. You can compare record credits in the jackets of your favorite albums, whether bands or soloists, and find many of the same players. This is why many country songs sound about the same and why RiverTown is different.
In an industry where bands don’t necessarily play on their own records, RiverTown is one of the few exceptions. Strong songs, powerful melodies, Eagle-esque harmonies, and instrumental chops to spare put this small town band in the inside lane to carry the torch for greats like Diamond Rio, Restless Heart, and the Eagles.
RiverTown was formed in 1989 by singer-guitarist Josh Guthrie and drummer Mike Heath when they were both eleven years old. They were joined by Ray Emmons on keyboard five years later and they began performing in honkey-tonks as freshmen in high school. Their search for the right line-up ended in Nashville in ’05 with the addition of Sean Martin on bass.
No description of RiverTown would be complete without mentioning their live show. Their roots may be country but their stage presence is definitely rock & roll. Combine this with their outstanding musicianship and you have a powerhouse both in the studio and on the stage….what tomorrow’s country music scene will call ‘the total package’.
