The lights dim over the standing room only crowd. The room is thick with an air of anticipation. A voice sprinkled with strong vibrato and a touch of old school R&B rings out, "There’s no other name that’s higher than yours Lord!" The crowd goes wild! The voice rings out again, this time with twice the intensity, "There’s no other name that’s higher than yours Lord. So we call him.." The crowd screams as the young but clearly seasoned artist points the microphone toward the audience... "Jesus"!
You would think that after over 250 performances across the nation just last year and four albums to his credit, urban inspirational, rhythm and praise ambassador Canton Jones would lose his intensity and hunger for the stage. But this twenty something musical prodigy is just getting started! On the heels of the re-release of The Password, a project that has become a staple in the Holy Hip Hop movement, Password: Access Granted has catapulted Canton Jones into the forefront of a new era in gospel music.
Part singer, songwriter, producer, and vocal arranger, Canton, a Deerfield Beach, Florida native has entertained over 300,000 people this year, sold nearly 50,000 units independently, and has several songs including "Love Song" and "Stay Saved" in regular rotation internationally. His unlimited repertoire, massive crowd appeal, and fast-growing fan base has set him on a course destined to challenge the genre of gospel music as we know it.
The product of a music-inspired family, Canton discovered his passion for music very early in life. By age five, he was already singing with a local quartet founded by his father. At 16, he was producing his own tracks as well as tracks for local artists. Canton later relocated to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College and began singing with the school’s world-renowned glee club - touring the world and performing for the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Stevie Wonder, Dr. Bobby Jones, and the late Ray Charles.
This experience established the foundation for a promising career and opened the door to a wide range of opportunities. Canton’s musical path continued as a member of World Changers Church International under the careful tutelage of Dr. Creflo A Dollar. Led by God, he joined the choir and was quickly noticed by the youth pastor after singing a solo one Sunday morning. He soon began working closely with the youth music ministry. Shortly after, he was signed to Arrow Records, a label owned and operated by Pastor Taffi Dollar.
Inspired by the obvious call on his life, Canton recorded his first solo project in 2003. The independent release, 20 Years, 3 Months & 12 Days, chronicles his path to salvation and earmarks the day he met his wife, Ramona Jones. This project paved the way for the grassroots success of the original release of The Password in 2004 which led to Canton’s national debut with Love Jones in summer 2005.
Due to the overwhelming response garnered from The Password, the album was re-released with additional tracks and dubbed Password: Access Granted.
With two Grammy nods, a Stellar Award nomination, and two Gospel Choice Awards to his credit, Canton still maintains an unwavering love for God and the quiet confidence of someone who knows the tide is turning his way. He was recently sought out to partner with Dr. Bobby Jones for the Jones and Jones campaign. This initiative will serve to promote the newly developed Gospel Music Conservatory and Museum, which is set for construction in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 2007. Jones’ Password: Access Granted project will also début in Europe August 2006. Jones personifies the great commission to go into all the world and win souls for the kingdom.
He regularly performs alongside the Hip Hop industry’s top names at events like David Banner’s "Heal the Hood" Concert, Vibe Music Fest, and Radio One’s Miami Spring Fest. He held his own alongside Kirk Franklin and secular performers Young Jeezy, T.I., Ludacris, and David Banner just to name a few. Canton’s popularity lies in the fact that he is versatile in his stage performance and his music has an edginess that is savvy and street-smart yet keeps the message clear. The clarity of his message has garnered numerous performance opportunities at key events such as Bishop T.D. Jakes’ MegaFest, Bishop Eddie L. Long’s RePresent Youth Conference, and Dr. Bobby Jones’ Artist Retreat.
More than an artist, he represents a philosophy, a movement, and a generation of believers who are relentless in their pursuit to bridge the gap between the church and the streets.
He understands that it is not just the music, but a way of life that offers peace and prosperity for anyone bold enough to pursue their God ordained purpose. Jones has embarked on an ambitious plan to save a million youth across the globe, raise up a nation of warriors for the kingdom, and bring the next phase of hip-hop to the forefront. Make no mistake about it, this is Canton Jones!
