CHAPTER ONE-It was the fall of 1990, and the multi-colored leaves were falling from the oak trees blown by the brisk wind. Pebbles, an attractive twenty-three-old year-old woman was starring out the window. She was bombarded with stacks of papers that needed to be filed for the mortgage company that had employed her for the past eighteen months, but instead of working she was daydreaming about an incident that occurred some eight years ago.
Pebbles used to live in a two bedroom, low income urban apartment in Newark, New Jersey, with her mom Ella and dad Rufus. Pebbles leaves the kitchen and heads for the bathroom. Meanwhile, Ella takes the paper out, walks over to the telephone on the wall, and dials the number on the paper.
“Hello.†said a female voice on the other end.
“Hello, may I speak to Barbara?â€
“This is she†the voice replied.
“Barbara, I just wanted to let you know that Rufus is married and has a fifteen year old daughter. So you can give your lipstick imprint and phone number to someone else, tramp!†Slamming down the phone, she ripped up the paper and throws it in the trash can.
