As far as fiction is concerned, I ADORE Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Elizabeth Stoddard, the Brontes, George Elliott, Barbara Kingsolver, Octavia Butler, Louise Erdrich, Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, Marilynne Robinson (particularly her most recent Pulitzer-Prize winner, GILEAD, a beautiful novel), Toni Morrison, Harriette Arnow's THE DOLLMAKER, Kate Chopin's THE AWAKENING, THINGS FALL APART by Chinua Achebe, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Sandra Cisneros, Maxine Hong Kingston, Margaret Atwood, Willa Cather, Joyce Carol Oates, David Foster Wallace (although a little esoteric and just plain gooney sometimes), Wallace Stegner, Upton Sinclair's THE JUNGLE (will make anyone want to be a vegetarian), Orwell's ANIMAL FARM.. this list goes on, too.Books I enjoyed as a child: ANNE OF GREEN GABLES and all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's masterpieces, Beverly Cleary's chronicles of Ramona Quimby's adventures, Louisa May Alcott's works, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (one of my favorite books of all time)! and many more....As far as non-fiction texts are concerned, I appreciate all the classic and controversial works by Catherine MacKinnon, Andrea Dworkin, Luce Irigaray, Simone Weil, Helene Cixous, Simone DeBeavoir (love the French feminists), etc. Peter Singer's IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS, Carol Adams' THE SEXUAL POLITICS OF MEAT, Temple Grandin's ANIMALS IN TRANSLATION and Paul Watson's SEAL WARS have had a huge influence on me. John Stoltenberg's REFUSING TO BE A MAN should be required reading for everyone!!Poets: Emily Dickinson, Louise Gluck, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, John Keats, June Jordan,Playwrights: Marsha Norman, Wendy Wasserstein, Shaw, Sartre, Noel Coward, Paula Vogel.Marya Hornbacher's memoir, WASTED, is one of the most accurate and well-written accounts of anorexia and bulimia I have ever read. It hit very close to home for me. Marya recently wrote a work of fiction entitled, THE CENTER OF WINTER, a very poignant and heartbreaking novel.
