Synapse was formed in 2003 by Luke Terpstra, former drummer of local band Detained. With Tom Pike playing bass, Luke managed to round up guitar player Bob Marr (Almost Heroes) and lead singer Ben Wilder (Culdasac). An infant yet instant chemistry began between the members as a list of new songs turned into recording trips to Chicago and a few smaller gigs. At this time, the band was called Leaving Atlantis. In 2004 after a short break, Tom left the band and Luke replaced him on bass. With Luke playing bass, we began to look for a new drummer. While trying out several drummers and not having much luck, Luke asked friend Chase Jackson to come play guitar. Within the first couple practices we knew Chase was going to become a part of the group. With the hard-driving metal sounding riffs from Bob mixed with the classical yet ominously powerful guitar solos from Chase mixed with the melodiously dark vocals and deep lyrics from Ben, the unique Synapse sound started to fall into place. It wasn't until late 2005, when Mike VanEck became the permanent drummer that the 5 some was complete. After that, Synapse began building a local Grand Rapids fan base with a packed out crowd showing up for their debut at Billy's Lounge. In 2006, after a year full of sold out shows and appearances all over Grand Rapids, unexplainable tensions began to grow within the 5 some. Bob Marr left the band a few months ago to pursue other opportunities while Ben added his keyboard capabilities to the Synapse sound. The remaining members reinvented a sound that goes hand in hand with the old epic Synapse sound but is in no way afraid of stretching the genre boundaries that the band is known to laugh at.Find Out Before You Go Out!
