Juan Pablo Lobos
Born in Chile on the 1st of June , 1974, in the town of Coquimbo, IV Region, arrives to Venezuela in 1976. Starts his musical carrer in 1992, at 19, influenced by the strong rock movement of that time; He takes up the guitar as main instrument, having as inspiration icons like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Blues Sarraceno, Edward Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt, Vito Bratta and Brian May among others.
Juan Pablo acquires his first knowledges of musical theory in the musical conservatory JOSE LUIS PAZ in Maracaibo. His first steps were on an acoustic, little by little he started studying the electric guitar (in a self-taught way) deepening in techniques such as: Tapping, Sweep-picking, strings-skipping, speed scaling, and several variations and combinations of them. This was pretty demanding in terms of dedication and discipline, practicing up to 8 hours daily (sometimes more).
In 1993, he adventures in the world of composing his own songs with his first band Paradigma, creating more than 20 songs with harmonies and solos in the style of that time; the first rehearsals were done in the University of Zulia, with audiences of a couple hundreds of people.
First Appearances
1993-1994 During this period, live shows, radio appearances and night club shows started, always maintaining ROCK as a mainstream. During that year, a short TV film was produced where Juan Pablo was main star. This movie gave him the chance to present his band in front of one thousand people in the Auditorium of Casa DItalia in Maracaibo.
1994-1995 First recordings in some local studios. Some own songs and covers, as well as promo songs for local bands were recorded. That year, some out of town shows are done; Juan creates a cover band called Tabú. Juan Pablo starts spreading his techniques during some improvisation songs in the middle of the shows.
1995-1997 Juan joins a progressive rock band called Vanguardia, which had already released an album; their most important presentations were: Re-opening of Baralt Theater, November of 96 Auditorium of Lia Bermudez Theater, in an interactive audio-video concert. Sociedad Gramática baptism of the new album, with songs in a progressive style. Zulias Theater of Contemporary Arts (MACZUL): opening of the Concert Auditorium. Live concert during the celebration of the Central American & Caribbean Games Banco Mara Auditorium: celebration of the bands anniversary.
1996-1998 He joins the band Terranova, recording an album with 8 songs in the Latin Rock genre, in the Hermanos Acurero Studio; travelling to Colombia to promote it, and giving several presentations there. He gave a show to baptize the album in front of 500 people.
In Venezuela, his most important shows of that time were: Opening with Desorden Público for 6000 people, on June 7th, 1997. Fundraising party for the Association for Special Kids Fupanas. Concert in the University Dr. Rafael Belloso Chacin with Voz Veis, celebrating the final day of the 10th promotion of Business Administration school.
1998-2000 During this time he travels to Chile, Iquique, where he buys his first Marshall amp and a Digitech Legend 21 processor. It isa t this moment that he studies and develops his own sound, improving and adapting his performance. He also creates some instrumental rock songs like: Boggie Rock, Cocinero Español and some own riffs in a rock fashion. On year 99 he records his first instrumental song, called Sala Llena (Full Stage) dedicated to the difficult times national rock was having. He joins the vocal group Calle 5, records several guitars for their first album and plays with the band in some shows: Banco Mara theater. Lía Bermúdez Theater. Club Creole. Anniversary of Circuito X, Baralt Theater.
2000-2002 In this period he acquires an Ibanez SG-540 Custom Made (modified) guitar, and, with more maturity in the musical and instrumental sense, he does some live shows in an underground movement in town; standing as one of the best guitar players (often called virtuoso) in the country. That year he starts giving music lessons for kids and teenagers, helping in the development of techniques for the electric guitar. Simultaneously he spreads in the commercial sense, showing his technique, speed, originality and composition skills; playing own songs, covers and improvisations. He records several instrumental songs, highlighting the ballad Sofía, a song dedicated to the birth of his first and only daughter.
2002-2004 He started his experiences in the publicity world, recording several jingles and televisión music, he joins his old friend Ramón Carrero, singer of the band Paradigma, when he begins recording the first single, called Agua of his new musical project, called La Sombra, during this time, he appeared in: La Sombra as a compensation band in the tour of Juanés and Fito Paez, in the Palacio de Eventos de Venezuela. Bellas Artes Theater, as guest musician with the band LP60, with some local artist from the 60s and 70s. Band Xtra (covers), concert in the Regional stage, organized by the Mayor of Maracaibo in November 2004, in front of 7000 people. Band Xtra, presentations on 3 stages of La Chinita Fair, San Francisco Fair, etc.
In this period he travels to Valera, Venezuela, where he gives several shows in local clubs with La Sombra, a band where he has been parto f the composition, recording and production of an album (with promotional title ReVerso), which is expected to be released in June 2006 . Juan Pablo has taken part in several productions of some local bands where he has recorded, supported and advised the band in the process. Near the end of 2005, Juan Pablo Lobos became the first Venezuelan to receive an endorsement of the well known Ibanez Guitars. Receiving a beautiful RGT-220HSOL, as well as full support from the company. Ibanez has now the attention fixed on Juan Pablo, as well as on Venezuela and his potential. There is no doubt Juan Pablo is one of the most influential guitar players in the country, and his carrer is going up real fast; getting to be respected even beyond the local frontiers as an excellent guitar player.
2005-2006 Projects and Presentations:
- Auditorium of the Centro Venezolano Americano de Zulia (CEVAZ), Maracaibo. Celebrating the Day of Youth in front of 200 people.
-Concierto M, with the internationally known band Voz Veis, along with Hillary Duff and Roque Valero, in front of 40,000 people, April 2005 in the Estadio Universitario, Caracas, Venezuela.
-Currently finishing the production of the album ReVerso with La Sombra
-Countrywide (and some international) guitar clinics for beginners, intermediate and advanced level participants, in strategic locations, to spread the study of guitar techniques and music as a form of art.
-Instrumental Concert Festival de Guitarra June 2005, Banco Mara Auditórium, Maracaibo.
-La Sombra, Fiesta de La Música,June 2005 C.C. Sambil, Maracaibo, Venezuela.
