Some cities where the bans have passed simply restrict certain breeds, allowing current owners to keep their dog along with a more expensive (around $500) licensing fee, where as other cities such as Denver, Colorado have completely banned the breed, ordering all pit bulls and mixes to be transported out of the city, or turned in to the local shelters to be euthanized. If a family pit is licensed, officials would show up on their doorstep and take the animal away to be killed. In Denver, the only exception to the BSL is if the dog is leashed and muzzled at all times off property, the owner maintains a $100,000 insurance policy, and complies to increased annual registration fees - and thats ONLY if the dog was licensed BEFORE January 1, 1990.Breeds such as American Staffordshire and Pit Bull terriers are often bred and trained as fighting dogs or other criminal activities. If these laws continue to pass, and these breeds are done away with, what will happen? The criminal activity will be forced either further underground, or criminals will simply switch to another breed. ANY BREED can be trained to be vicious...it's all in the owner's responsibility to properly train and socialize an animal.

Known as generic vicious dog laws, they put restrictions on the ownership of dogs that pose a danger to people, restrictions such as confinement in locked, escape-proof kennels while outdoors on the owner's property; muzzles when the dog is off the property; and purchase of a liability insurance policy.
