New Orleans, Louisiana… A place where liquor stores run more fluent than the hot water in the homes of the community, and crack cocaine is so heavy that you would think of it as a distant cousin in every family. The downtown, Lower 9th Ward neighborhood, literally raised Corey Simon A/K/A C.O., who is the youngest of five siblings, (One deceased). This type of neighborhood activity was reality to this young kid with dreams and admirations of making it out of poverty. Although growing up with both parents under one roof may sound pleasant to most, but with a mother forced to work two jobs and a dad who’s forced to pull extra shifts to make ends meet, it’s not impossible to see the outcome of a child growing up in that type of community. With the death of his brother Anthony “Mainey†Simon, and the murders of his first cousin and nephew within a year, C.O. quickly turned to street economics. C.O. began being a street entrepreneur at the young age of 15, by selling marijuana and crack cocaine in the community. Going to school became meaningless, and he found another way to make use of those infamous black and white Marble composition books. Besides, having an older uncle being one of the biggest suppliers in your neighborhood can’t make situations better, could it? It wasn’t until he was threatened with a small stint in the Big House at 17 years old, when the thought of another career entered C.O.’s mind. Writing rhymes was just something to make those long hours on the block pass by faster. Writing rhymes just wasn’t paying enough for this young teen growing up in a world where material things seem to out-weigh anything opposite. May 17th 2001, was the day C.O. decided to finally give up all street ties. A 7 pound 1 ounce baby girl was born. This marks the day that Corey really took those rhymes seriously. And what a day that was… A star was born… August 29th, 2005 marked the day C.O. was faced with more adversity. Hurricane Katrina literally washed away the city of New Orleans, and left hundred of thousands without a place to call home. Corey’s neighborhood was hit the hardest. Hurricane Katrina’s storm surge put a major strain on the levee’ system designed to protect the citizens from flooding, and sent 12 feet of water racing through the streets of the Lower 9th Ward, killing hundreds. “After surviving that, I feel there’s nothing I can’t go through,†says a pretty confident Corey “C.O.†'I’ve been through a lot, and I’m not going to let Katrina stop me from being successful. I’M STILL FOCUSED!!!â€
