About Me

I have this strange recurring element in my dreams, where I'm bouncing considerable distances down this stark, white, subterranian corridor. Ever so often there are ladders along the walls. When I climb them, I'll reach a sort of manhole cover, which opens up into all kinds of odd places; houses, police stations, natural history museums, nondescript institutional facilities, etc.

You know how everyone claims to be a "weirdo" or "freak magnet?" Well, I definitely felt like a "weirdo magnet" on this particular occasion.
I was shopping at the local Wal-Mart, when this incredibly average looking individual, whom I hadn't had the pleasure of meeting previously approached me, and enthusiastically exclaimed, "You have the gift, but you're afraid to use it!"
I was like, "Do what now?"
He then proceeded to explain that he is the "one hundredth reincarnation of the last dragon," (I swear, I'm SO not making this up) and that he has powers and stuff. He then informed me that I had a similarly impressive past life.
I then attempted to make small talk by inquiring, "Are you like Wiccan, or something?"
"No!" He snorted. "Wicca is weak magic!"
At this, I quickly blurted, "Thanks for the good news!" and promptly vacated the premisis.

Playing the tuba in junior high and high school band was definitely the highlight of my teenage existence. Whenever I see an American Pie film, I feel a rush of nostalgia when Michelle Flaherty begins an anecdote with, "There was this one time, at band camp..." I went to eight band camps when I was in school, so I can definitely relate. However, I graduated from high school in 1995, and American Pie came out in 1999...so you can't say I was copying. I was keepin' it real, band geek style!

The Dante's Inferno Test has banished you to the Second Level of Hell!
You have come to a place mute of all light, where the wind bellows as the sea does in a tempest. This is the realm where the lustful spend eternity. Here, sinners are blown around endlessly by the unforgiving winds of unquenchable desire as punishment for their transgressions. The infernal hurricane that never rests hurtles the spirits onward in its rapine, whirling them round, and smiting, it molests them. You have betrayed reason at the behest of your appetite for pleasure, and so here you are doomed to remain. Cleopatra and Helen of Troy are two that share in your fate.
Here is how you matched up against all the levels:

Level Score
Purgatory (Repenting Believers) Very Low
Level 1 - Limbo (Virtuous Non-Believers) High
Level 2 (Lustful) Very High
Level 3 (Gluttonous) Moderate
Level 4 (Prodigal and Avaricious) Moderate
Level 5 (Wrathful and Gloomy) Low
Level 6 - The City of Dis (Heretics) High
Level 7 (Violent) Moderate
Level 8- the Malebolge (Fraudulent, Malicious, Panderers) High
Level 9 - Cocytus (Treacherous) Low
Take the Dante's Inferno Test

My Interests

Rock+Star=Chavez LOL
I have a blast collaborating on creative matters, and performing on bass with various bands. I've recently teamed up with Zak Weaks. A "ball park" description of the band's (still evolving) sound would be a cross between The Foo Fighters, The Clash and Sound Garden.
Some of My Strings Kids
I also find my job as a music teacher/math tutor at the Phoenix School quite fun and inspiring. Two years ago, I founded a string program at our school. I'm constantly amazed at how hard our strings students work, while maintaining an enthusiastic, fun-loving attitude.

I'd like to meet:

Have you seen this man?

It seems wherever there's a large group...he's there. Then...as quickly as he appeared...he vanishes. I think he might be a member of the Opus Dei...or the Priory of Sion perhaps.
...And Now For A Public Service Announcement

Each day, an estimated one in a million Americans has contact with Travis (common street names include; Chavez, Mr. Hairgrove, Mr. H, Hair Grow, Grover, Chavey, Travey, Trav, T-Rav, T-Rex and Sweet T).
Research has shown that even recreational exposure to Travis causes crippling addiction in .001% of all documented cases. A happy marriage or two, and possibly a successful career have been laid waste by Travis. Common infirmities linked to prolonged relationships with Travis include chronic projectile vomiting, multiple paraphilias, lycanthropy and bad penmanship.
It doesn't have to be like this. We can choose to be strong, and resist the charms of Travis. So...when Travis asks if he can hang out with you...JUST SAY NO!

Music:

J.S. Bach Rocks
Being a musician, I draw inspiration from several styles of music. My influences range from Wagnerian operas to Devo, from Frank Sinatra to Alice In Chains, and from Pink Floyd to P-Funk.
Here's some photos of a few of my favorites:

Frank Zappa w/a Friend

The Oddity, David Bowie

Nice Hair, Bjork

Primus Bringin' Silly Back

Movies:

Eraserhead "Baby"
I mostly enjoy watching horror movies/thrillers. A Clockwork Orange, Freaks, Candyman, Eraserhead, Donnie Darko, Hellraiser and the original, black and white Night of the Living Dead are among my favorites.

Lester in Amer. Beauty
A close second to horror movies for me are witty and/or dark comedies like American Beauty, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Nurse Betty, Babe (Yes, the one with the talking pig. It's actually quite macabre) and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou.
May Hangin' w/Suzy
I'm also a big fan of many movies produced and/or distributed by Lions Gate Films. I recommend the following; American Psycho, Comic Book Villains, Secretary, Vulgar, May, The Devil's Rejects and Ginger Snaps

Television:

A Dalek Greets the Doctor
I don't watch a whole lot of TV because commercials, slanted, sensationalized journalism, and reality TV shows annoy me. I don't even have my television hooked-up to cable, a satellite dish, or anything like that. I just watch DVDs.
However, in the past I've gotten into a few shows, and I occasionally rent or buy season box sets of the following programs; Xena: Warrior Princess, Mr. Show, Tales from the Crypt, The X- Files, South Park and Doctor Who.

Books:

Dante, the Tour Guide
Regretably, I'm not much of a reader. I keep vowing to myself, that I'm going to get reaquainted with the classics I rushed through in high school, (Edgar Allen Poe's short stories, Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, the novels of Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift, the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, etc.) but I never get around to it.
Bizarre Boneless Chick
While I'm a slacker when it comes to reading books, I'm actually a quite avid reader of magazines. I subscribe to Bass Player and Bizarre. Bizarre is a British magazine that does stories on eccentric people, and individuals with well...bizarre talents. It's basically a modern day freak show. Other magazines that I enjoy reading, but do not subscribe to include; Scientific American, Skeptic, Rolling Stone and Fangoria which I purchase off the newstand every now and then.

Heroes:

Mi Familia
I admire many people, ranging from family; my parents, Jeff and Kathy, my 92 year old Oma (German for Grandmother), Aline, and my brother, Juston to living inspirations like Kinky Friedman and Gore Vidal to deceased great people like Frank Zappa, Carl Sagan, Mark Twain, Jonathan Swift, Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin to founders of ways of life that are just and noble, like Jesus Christ and Siddhartha Gautama, (better known as Buddha).

Who Writes History?

Do you ever look back at some of those history lessons you used to sit through in school and wonder, "Did it really happen like that?"  I often do.  Today, you hear lots of people complain ...
